Ever call a female skydiver a "girl skydiver"? No, because there's no need to show a clear distinction between males and females when you're talking about a HOBBY.

I've known girls who play games pretty much my whole life, anyone who calls themselves a "girl gamer" is obviously an attention !@#$%.

Terms such as "girl gamer" are used by a number of people because they just assume that the entertainment form is experienced primarily by men.  They do not say "female sky-diving" because even if that entertainment form was experienced primarily by men, it is so ambiguous a form that no gender classification is given.  Since men are most often seen as being the ones who play video games, the term "girl gamer" is used to be distinctive.  Those who actually are gamers (and by that I do not mean the people who just play games like Madden) tend to not use the term unless  they are referring to those who play things like Barbie Horseback Riding; the term will die out over time.

I'm not even a gamer anyway. I used to be, but I got bored of it. I don't think I've ever heard the term "girl-gamer", but I agree it's stupid.

Well my girlfriend likes playing games, but isnt all KH FAN FICCY like most of them are
which makes her a "gamer girl" imo

I dunno, I think "girl gamer" only is in use as a specific demographic, the same as "casual gamer", "core gamer", etc.  It's still kinda stupid, but it does make sense. Plus, think of the term "man-!@#$%".  Why is the distinction of gender made with that?  Because the word "!@#$%" is typically only used when describing a woman, the same as how "gamer" is typically associated with men.

It's still dumb though...

What is UP with these double standards in todays society?  Holding a door open for a woman can be seen as sexist, but calling a girl that plays videogames a "girl gamer" isn't seen as sexist, and is actually viewed to be "politically correct" or whatever the term is?!?

Society is so screwed up; We should save ourselves the 20 years to 2 centuries of torment and just blow ourselves to kingdom come with our huge arsenal of nuclear weapons now, and save ourselves from suffering through all the horrible things to come.   :-\

Not really. There is a gamer culture, where males are dominant in numbers. Even most girls that play videogames aren´t really gamers. A female gamer is rare enough for it to be noted, right?
