Title: How do I use my iPod as a Hard Drive?
Post by: Oni_Link on June 08, 2008, 05:23:09 pm
Can you guys tell me how I can use my iPod as a Hard Drive Disk, not a Removable Disk. I know I can't find any help on google because of the damn search terms.

Anyways it's only recognized as a removable disk and I was thinking I could change its device settings in windows but that might screw up my pc and make it recognize all iPods like so.

why does it matter? It's not like it's stopping you from reading and writing to it O_o

You can't. You can only use it as a USB Mass Storage device.

Yes
Again I don't want it to be used as a removable disk, but as a hard drive disk

I don't think anyones really quite sure what you mean by that. I mean a removable disk drive serves the same purpose as a hard drive really. I mean it's not like you can boot off it for that you either need a bootable flashcard or a reader that is bootable, and the IPod is neither of those (as far as I know).

It's impossible.

Besides using it as a removable disk is the exact same thing. Just keep it in your computer and you can install games and programs to it then just run the programs from it.
It's easy.

Step 1: Stick it in your Computer

Step 2: Let it stay in the computer 24/7

Congratulations on installing your Ipod as a Hard drive on your PC.

Just don't !@#$% remove it, or it becomes a removeable disk!

Why you'd want to, I don't know, but you can do one of two things:

- Modify the firmware of the iPod. No idea how hard this is, but it's part of the code used with the USB class when the device is connected that it identifies itself to Windows / whatever. If you know what you're doing, you should be able to rewrite the firmware to identify itself as a hard drive - there's probably some property deep down that's not worth the trouble of finding. I have a feeling this will be more difficult than it sounds as an ipod is more than a hard drive with a media player attached, it's probably only pretending to be a simple mass storage device when you plug it in. Not having ever owned an ipod I've no idea whether you can actually do this without dismantling it.

- Take the thing to pieces, take out the hard drive, and connect it to an interface circuit and plug it into your PC. This should be relatively straight forward, you could try searching for guides on replacing ipod hard drives for info.

I care because you're asking about trying to do something that you can't do.
