Entertainment / Best Nes game on the Wii's virtual console
« on: November 17, 2009, 01:25:15 am »
ok the reason this is one butt load of a poll is that I was informed via Wii message box that since I was one of many that downloaded the internet channel while it was 500 wii points I can be reimburshed those wii points in the form of a free nes game of my choosing by Dec 31, 2009.
I need everyone at ZFGC's help in deciding which game would be worth it. Since its free I don't want to get something that sucks.
Please vote honestly as the polls may influence my decision.

Note: I didn't include any games I already downloaded from the wii shop channel or own on disc on the game cube. Also as a personal note Super Mario Bros 2 aka Super Mario USA is a peice of crap to me now that I know what it was originally before nintendo stole it.

ya I was thinking of moving my Mario game, that everyone most likely forgot, from game maker to flash because flash is much more flexable than game maker coding wise.

My question is where can I go to get a tutorial on how to get some features accomplished such as gravity, bottom top and side hit detection, password or file saving, etc.

Any suggestions?

Entertainment / I have waited long enough for Nintendo to do this...
« on: December 26, 2008, 05:53:01 pm »
I have been anxiously waiting for Nintendo to release Super Mario Allstars for the wii.
Because I loved that game, I liked the nes originals on the nes. But I liked Super Mario Allstars because it felt like a HD version of the the classic Super Mario Bros. series on the nes.

In light of the fact that Nintendo hasn't even bothered to do it, because they released Super Mario World only. I have made an online petition for them to release the game.

Please look at the petition and lend me your signature:

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/FreeMario/

Not just for this game but for all games you wished the Wii channel had but will never seem to get. :'(

Okay here is my problem:
I have two goombas in a room with a floor and two walls made of Block objects. The block objects are solid 16x16 squares.
When a goomba hits the block the collision event goes as follows:
if(vspeed > 0 && y < y+1)
{
      move_contact(270);
      vspeed = 0;
}
This tells the goomba not to fall through the block and to turn around when it hits the block from the side.

I attempted to make the goomba object solid and add the same code to a collision event for when it hits a goomba.
When solid it appears to make one goomba get shoved up against the other one which makes it appear to disappear.
When not solid the goombas pass by eachother.

How can I get the goombas to react to a collision with what it is an instance of itself.

I tried doing and if statement to check to see if itself and the object involved in the collision are not the same id.
I tried the following code conditions:
"if(!(self.id == other.id))" and "if(!(self == other))"

and I get no change in behavior.

Any Ideas?

If someone can provide hosting I can upload the gmk file so someone could help directly.

Discussion / Planning on moving up from Game Maker.
« on: April 07, 2008, 02:03:50 am »
Well I'm thinking of moving up from Game Maker 7 to a different more complex programming language.
What would be the best language for a well experienced 8 yr GML programmer to learn.
Also is there any good, by good I mean easy to learn, languages that will allow you to create games for multiple platforms?

Other Discussion / URGENT REQUEST Linux Problem!!
« on: February 26, 2008, 03:18:17 am »
Ok. Here is the run down. I screwed up the kboot file. Don't know how I just want to fix it.
Does anyone here know how linux works and can help me re-edit the kboot file from within the "emergency shell mode" it drops me in?
Also can one run program code by manuallly typing it in. Like for example if I were to manually type the correct kboot file in would it execute it?
If the answer is yes could some please post the kboot file "inards" I mean the text within the file so I can try to manually run kboot then get in and fix my mess without have to format my ps3 and start over?

Feedback / What ever happened to the Recruitement Forum?
« on: February 13, 2008, 08:18:11 pm »
Well here is the deal, I'm getting close to releasing my first demo of my game but my cameo, a ZFGCer by the name of Regulus, suddenly dropped off the earth. (I can't even e-mail him! It returns e-mail not found!) So I was going to put up another cameo wanted notice but without the Recruitment Forum I can't.

So what's up?

By the way all I need is permission to use your likeness on this forum, which means Avatar, as a cameo. Nothing else.
Also your cameo will play a key supporting role in the game!

I will pay the user 50 rupees! (when I get it I don't have enough but I assure you you will get em')

Other Discussion / Who here loathes Valentines Day?
« on: February 10, 2008, 04:09:50 am »
I completely hate the holiday. What is really in existence for? There is not meaning except to make those of us unlucky enough not to have someone special feel like crap. The only thing I can think of is....

*ALERT: To avoid flames please copy and paste the next line into notepad only if you want to read the following*
...a stupid excuse to make people spend thousands of dollars to prove they love each other even though they could do that cheaper any of the other 364 (365 if leap year) days a year.
*ALERT Over*

Well anyhow does any one else think that Valentines day stinks?

Other Discussion / Odd Question...
« on: January 08, 2008, 06:21:30 pm »
For my Mario game I plan to theme each world based on a particular theme and base the bosses encountered on theme in each world. Here is my planned layout for one of them:

World 1: Ancient Lareece (La-reece) aka Ancient Greece
Boss 1: Larry Koopa

The only problem is that I have no clue as to what the ancient Greeks called their ruler.
I know Rome called theirs Caesar (which means king) but what did the Greeks call their ruler.

Please put your answer in English, you may need to look up a translation.

Thanks in advance, Zen.

Entertainment / The writers strike couldn't have come at a worse time...
« on: December 24, 2007, 04:57:04 am »
Fox released a DVD, "Bender's Big Score," the previously planned to release instead of bringing back the Futurama series!

It was decided by the creators to split the movie into 13 episodes as a test to see if it was worth bringing back, but now how are they going to do the show on Comedy Central in '08 if all the bloody writers are on strike?
Not to mention Fox smacked them in the face by releaseing DVDs of the series without paying them. So Fox and all the other networks that did that do deserve the strike but now Fox got what they wanted... a cheesy movie err... DVD and no more Futurama!!!

This Sucks!

Wait... oh yea discuss.

Other Discussion / WindowsXP Sp2: Icons are in reverse order by default
« on: December 17, 2007, 09:07:29 pm »
Well its simply the icons are in reverse order by default.

This is annoying ANY dialog box I open: Run, save as, etc. shows the icons in any folder to be in reverse alphabetical order! Even some icons like MY Computer appear last instead of first in the list!!!
It clears up only temporarily when I reorganize the icons by name but I'm getting sick and tired of doing this ever single time!

Screenshot is below: *This is not a fake!*

Coding / Sound problems with Game Maker 7!!!
« on: November 21, 2007, 07:34:02 pm »
OK here is the deal... I converted all my sfx for my game from wav to mp3 to cut down on memory and filespace but now the sounds will only play one at a time.

Example:
While in wav format, I ran Mario under a series of thwomps each one makes plays a boom sound when the hit the ground.
But in mp3 format, I did the same test and I only heard the boom sound when only one thwomp hit the ground.

And the boom is some how canceled out when Mario jumps. (he makes a boing noise)
What can I do? I don't want to go back to wav because it will increase my file size from 6.5mb to 11.4mb!
I have tried changing the properties of each sound to normal, 3d, background music, and multimedia but to no avail.

Any suggestions?

« on: November 12, 2007, 03:18:45 pm »
Right now I'm posting from a terminal at school but I can't even access this site from my pc. When I type in "www.zfgc.com" into the address box on my home computer it comes up with a 404 no page found. And sometimes it just flat out doesn't load a site at all, it just sits there.

I know the site isn't down because I'm posting this right now!

Entertainment / Zentawolcotious's Game Reviews Series: Toad Strikes Back
« on: November 05, 2007, 10:10:46 pm »
Hello. Since the release of GM7 there have been countless games released not only made by GM7 but Klick and Play, Multimedia Fusion, and Shockwave. And since noone here has taken it on themselves to start a fan game review I figured I would pioneer into it.

How this works, I will present a review for a fan game or original freeware game that has been released within the last 6 months and after my initial post you all can comment on the game or my skills as a game reviewer. Note: This is not an ad for a game but it talks about games.

Now on to my very first review:

Toad Strikes Back

Author: ThunderDragon (of Mario Fan Games Galaxy)
System: Windows 98/NT/2000 XP
Rating: E 10+ (Everyone ten and older)
Development time: 4 years
Publish Year: 2007

Now that the specs are out of the way on to the meat of this discussion.

Brief Story Over-view:
Mario has gone somewhere or it has been so many years in the future he is dead. (The story isn't clear on this part)
And Bowser went off to far off lands to try to conquer them. One day a magikoopa who claims to be kin to Bowser takes over the koopa clan and proceeds to take over the mushroom kingdom. Eventually a common citizen, named Toad, steps up and tries to save the kingdom from the koopa clan.

Game Play 7.57/10
The game play is mostly glitch free with a few animation errors every now and then but none too noticeable.
The game starts you off in a level hub called the Mushroom Kingdom where you can select from a variety of 7 worlds. (at first you can only go to world 1) The player has to only press up in front of a world's door to enter that world from there they enter another level hub that contains the the world's stages all set to the theme of that world.
Like...
World 1 = Grassland (Mostly overworld sunny Levels)
World 2 = Caverns (Deep Underground type Levels)
World 3 = Beach (Aquatic, underwater or near water levels)
World 4 = Pipe Woods (Pipes, pipes, and more plumbing pipes)
and so on...

Controls 5/10
The key for picking up and throwing items (CTRL) and be sticky at times and cause the player to blow their character up because they could let go of a bomb-omb in time.
There is a total of 7 keys/buttons in use during the game but you can only customize the first two (Shift and CTRL) which not that bad unless you want to only use the game-pad which would mean you would need a separate program like JoyToKey to customize all the keys used.
The key customizations are "forgotten" by the game when the player resets the game with the F2 key.
The camera tends to jump up and down when your using a game-pad's joystick to control the main character.

Interface 10/10
This game sets it self apart from most Mario games by allowing you to carry up to three items at once and utilizes to score as money in order to play the many mini-games that are found.

Level Layout 10/10
Each level's layout is short in the beginning and progressively gets longer yest is still ingeniously designed. None of the levels, except when you have to pass part of it in a lake of lava, (World 6) have time limits which is nice because the some areas require more time and skill then others. To end each level you must find and activate a red star switch, when all the star switches have been activated the world's boss stage opens up. Which usually a castle or a normal slightly more difficult level with puzzles and locked doors leading to a boss fight at the end. Additionally to unlocking the boss stage a secret stage can be activated by retrieving all of the mushroom coins found in the levels, there is one in each stage including the boss stage. The secret level is hidden in all the Worlds except 1 and 3.
Each level has at least one halfway flag that will allow the player to resume the level at the flag in the event of death. In addition to the  level flags you can use pipes you go through and the boss door as resume points too.

Boss Fights Beginning 10/10 Towards End 5/10
Note: I will explain why I have two scores for this.

The bosses are creative. They are souped up versions of common enemies found in the game. Playing off the SMW2 boss sequence the main antagonist comes in and comments about your progress and then swoops left and right spilling magic on the enemy on screen transforming it into a creature which appears to be a very well hand drawn super enemy.

Note: I have yet to complete the game but I will put the bosses in order as I found them. Additionally I will give them names since Thunderdragon did not.

World: 1
Name: Boom Boom Koopa
Behavior: Slams massive hands on the grounds and runs back and forth. Upon being hurt it jumps in place and shakes not only the ground but loose some bricks from the top of the screen which you have to dodge. During the "rock shower" Boom Boom is invulnerable to attack. With each strike to the head Boom Boom releases more and more rocks from the ceiling and runs faster back and forth.

World: 2
Name: Tubba Blubba
Behavior: Walk back and forth attempting to ram you. The only way to inflict damage is to hammer the platform he is only sending him to  some spikes on the ceiling which cause him to barf out his heart. Attacking the heart damages Tubba. With each hit he also gets faster so watch out.

World 3:
Name: Capitan Shy
Behavior: Jumps towards player and spins trident until magic balls appear to spin around it. When the balls turn from blue to red he throws it at the player. The captain will give chase to the player even if the trident is in the other direction, giving the player ample time to pickup and throw the trident at him. Upon taking damage, he will fly off screen (as if you hit him really hard!) and several shy guys will fall down on to the screen. The captain soon will return and the fight resumes. As always with each hit his jumps will become longer and faster which makes it easy to pass under the captain.

World 4: (This is where it gets annoyingly hard!)
Name: Franken-Pirahana-Stein
Behavior: Stays put and lets and un ending army of pirahana plant weeds try to bash into you. Some of the weeds will carry a block you can pick up and throw at the enormous pirahana plant sticking out of the Franken-Stein Pipe. After dislodging the plant you have to jump on the to the pipe and press down the enter it consequentially dealling damage to it. After a few hits the weeds will move faster and begin to shoot yellow flames.

World 5: (Unfinished but I've been one hit from defeating it)
Name: Robo-Bill
Behavior: chases you through a never ending level shooting cannon balls, rockets, and pretty much anything a crazy robot bent on destroying you would shoot! He also throws bomb-omb which you need to pickup and chunk back at him before it blows up in order to inflict any damage. The insane part about the fight is everything is happening at once! So it is almost impossible to dodge anything!
What's worse is when you get his health down he gets faster! As if he wasn't hard enough!

Security 10/10
Most reviewer don't dive into this but I wanted to review every aspect of this game so I went on-line and downloading as many hex scanner, memory scanners, and game trainers I could find to attempt to cheat at this game. Every attempt to scan the game's memory and hex failed. This tells me the game is nearly inhackable which makes the game more fun for those who like playing by the rules and turns away those who only like destroying the game and the fun in playing it.

Overall Score:
5/10

Other Discussion / Multimedia Fusion Game Problems
« on: November 02, 2007, 02:18:51 pm »
Here recently I've tried playing games created with Multimedia Fusion.
To be specific I've played Yoshi Vs. Windows and Toad Strikes Back.
Their both good games and that's why I tried playing them but that's a story for the gaming forum.
The deal is about 10 minutes in to both games I hear a sound effect, like a coin, being repeated which occurs most often when I run through coins or something. Aside from the head-ache inducing noise at that time the game it self appears to only function while I'm pressing a keyboad key or moving the mouse when I stop either action is appears to freeze.

What could be the reason for this?

Entertainment / Paranoia Agent *contains final episode spoilers*
« on: October 20, 2007, 04:20:02 am »
Its a good show, it was on Adult Swim for a while and recently went through its final episode conveniently titled "Final Episode."
I really didn't understand he main story too well but it was still good, not great like Bleach but good.

Three things I can't understand even a bit is the opening/ending sequences and the end of the final episode.
In the Opening: Why are they all laughing? Why are some people laughing in weird places, like underwater, mount Everest, the moon?
In the Closing: Why are they all sleeping and the ending credits? The appear to have just drop over suddenly for no reason.
In the Final Episode: How could some girl cause a giant demon blob (called "Little Slugger") to appear when she lied about how her dog died.
In the Final Episode: Why is some scientist writing a huge equation and what is he freaking out about?

Yah I looked at the forum statistics, mainly because I'm bored, and statistically the sound and music forum, game design, programming, WIP,  and completed games are the least visited boards on zfgc. That's more than half the resources section on this board! :o

Well ?

The reason I posted this poll is because of the slow response to any of my posts and I was interested in how many users here like Mario.
