My brother just sold his. He used a "clean my account" feature to wipe eerything, but he now says he isn't sure if it wiped our credit card data. I can't find anything that says what the feature does, so does anyone here know?

Graphics Requests/Archive / [Solved] Inventory Screen
« on: March 08, 2009, 09:27:45 pm »
I'm looking for a custom inventory background to go with Link's Awakening Remastered. Why? Well for one, the original LttP inventory screen is too big. There's empty space after all the items are in it. Two, the original inventory screen sucked and I want to add a little something different to it.

Any takers? The size will be 320x240. That's the window size of the game.

Recruitment / Oracle of Hours
« on: March 04, 2009, 11:32:29 pm »
My project Oracle of Hours has actually spun into the development phase. I have completed the title screen, name input, and scrolling. Now, since I am currently alone on this project, I would like to ask if anyone wants to help out.

Graphics
It's gameboy style, so it will be simple to do. Some of the sprites already exist and just need customizing! (Example Farore already has walking forward. She needs walking left and right and walking up)

Musicians
This is another easy task. The Oracle games featured a lot of similar music, but I wanted to try and play along with the Link's Awakening path and give each dungeon a "theme". I also wanted to have some new tunes to make the game more appealing.

Story Writers
This is something everyone and anyone can do, as long as it's agreed on by the majority. Allow me to introduce Plot Outline 1 (3/1/09).

Quote
Characters
Link - The hero
Farore - Oracle of Hours, also an artist or actor
Apophis - Magistrate of the Moon, main villan
Maku Tree - Wise old tree and guide to Link
Impa - Zelda's caretaker
Zelda - Princess of Hyrule

Summary
A few months after the events of Seasons and Ages, the Essence of the Triforce again calls to Link. A force greater than Ganon seeks the Light Force caused by a reare eclipse of the sun and moon. To accomplish this mission, Apohpis kidnaps Farore in hopes of making the eclipse occur. If Apophis can make his dream a reality, not only Falsia but all of Hyrule will be consumed by his rage.

"Linked" game will serve as a final battle for Hyrule rather than a fight with Ganon (since he is dead). Apophis will fulfill his wish and obtain the Light Force. He will attempt to open a portal to Hyrule, but Zelda appears and seals the portal. Link defends Zelda and ends up battling Apophis the God of Hours. (He has the might of a God with the Light Force)

Except from a beta outline:

Style: Gameboy
Connection to Seasons/Ages: None
Overworld name: Falsia
Theme: Day & Night transitions (Overworld changes with day and night)

Day:
Flowers are open
Tide is low
Gargoyle statues block paths
Some houses close their doors

Night:
Flowers are closed
Tide is high
Gargoyles come to life
Most houses close their doors while ones who had theirs closed during the day are now open

Special Role: Link will be able to control the hours using the Lamp of Hours in cooperation with the Moon Lanterns scattered around Falsia. When
Link lights the Moon Lanterns, night falls. The Moon Lanterns will remain lit until Link chooses to smother the flame. The Lamp of Hours will
absord sunlight while Link travels throughout the day, and absorption time will progress faster when Link collects more essences of hours. Link
can also travel to "sun spots", hidden in unobvious places in Falsia. Here Link can instantly fill his lantern with sunlight for the Moon
Lanterns.

Linked Game: If the player manages to 100% complete the game without dying, then the option to start a "linked game" unlocks. In a linked game,
the player will find enemies to increase much more in numbers, the Lamp of Hours will take much longer to absorb sunlight, and at the end when
Link defeats Apophis' second form, the eclipse will occur and Link will have to battle Apophis the God of Hours. To add to the sense of urgency,
the portal to Hyrule will open in the Temple of Hours, leading straight to the very place Link first began his quest. Although the player will
not get the chance to enter the portal, Link will battle to keep Apophis from conquering Hyrule as well as Falsia.

Main Characters:
Link - The Hero
Farore - An artist who usually paints the visions she has in her dreams.
Apophis - The villan who kidnaps Farore in hopes of using her power to summon a rare eclipse that will grant him the might of a God.
Maku Tree - The Maku Tree is old and wise now, and explains many things to Link when the player asks.

Cameo Characters:
Jeod - A man of the seas, Jeod is the sailor who keeps track of the tides.
*ZFGCer's name* - Archaeologist who lives in the desert.
Jon - A mapmaker who lives in the swamp. Will add details to Link's maps to aid in the player's quest.
*Contributor's name* - A hiker who lives in the mountains. Will tell stories about his treks, and often mistakenly reveals secrets in the
mountains.
*Nintendo Seasons/Ages employee's name* - Gasha enthusiast. Also a secreted ring appraiser.
*Contributor's name* - A storyteller in the village of Fay who loves to talk about urban legends.

Plot: After a short time post-Seasons and Ages, Link is again called by the Essence of the Triforce. This time, the Oracle of Hours is in danger,
as well as Hyrule. Apophis, an evil astronomer, aka Magistrate of the Moon, seeks to utilize Farore's mastery of day and night to cause a rare
eclipse which is said to grant the might of a God to whoever comes into contact with the light it shines. The eclipse has never been seen before,
and is therefore only a legend told by the villagers. But when it happens, a ray of light bathes itself on the Temple of Hours, ironically the
fortress and home of Apophis. Link must stop the corrupt astronomer from wreaking havoc, with the help of Farore's heirloom, the Lamp of Hours.

Dungeons and Items
Sundial Shrine - Roc's Feather
Flower Gardens - Power Bracelet
Beach Cove - Seed Blaster
Hourglass Pyramid - Mole Mitts/Pickaxe
Clock Tower - Spinner
Magma Mines - Leever Drill
Vampire Crypt - Portal Cube
Temple of Light - Mirror Shield
Temple of Hours - Final dungeon (no item)

The maps are here. As you can see, I have changed the antagonist's name so as to not completely copy JonLeung's game idea. I have also read his discussion topic from when he was making these maps and collected and built this outline from it, with modifications. The maps are meant to be played out with this plot, but subtle changes can be made.

Coding / Creating a Zelda Game - Where to start
« on: March 02, 2009, 11:47:46 pm »
This guide is for those of you who have this grand scheme of a Zelda game all planned out, right down to the last detail, but then have trouble putting it into code when you have the ability to code. Why do you have trouble? You don't know how or where to start!

(This tutorial is for all game making programs, by the way)

I started off with the basic crap. A title screen, file select, name input. I made sure the name would save when the player was finished inputting it. Second, I made a debug room so I could work out every player control, including all the items. Third, I made sure the file select worked by enabling it to save in the debug room. Once I got all that down, I finalized the debug room by adding NPCs and text, among other things used a lot in the game. (Enemies, a boss chamber, small keys, dungeon puzzles, etc)

There's your basic engine. Now you need to implement your story. Start with putting the overworld in your game, then placing Link where he's supposed to start. Work from there, adding in collisions, NPCs, text, and cutscenes. Now that you have the beginning of your game done, it's time to plan how to carry out the rest of the game. If you're going to be testing a lot of things, it would be a good idea to make "warp points" or a "debug mode" so you can easily access certain areas.

Good way to start off if you have no idea where to begin.

Discussion / Oracle of Hours
« on: February 28, 2009, 05:06:19 am »
Yeah yeah I know I know. I'm already doing LAR, etc etc. Don't quit it, etc etc. But I'M NOT! This topic serves simply as a community story development based on the maps for the fake Oracle of Hours game featured on VGmaps.com. (I have also posted a zip attachment in discussion for anyone who wants to use them)

So, what we know so far.

>Game title is Oracle of Hours
>Farore is most likely an author or tutor
>The world is called Falsia, but that is because it was meant as an April Fools joke
>Game features day and night system, changeable by Link via using a special item to light the strange statues resembling gossip stones
>The entire overworld changes between day and night, see graveyard for example
>Dungeons are all dependent on day and night transitions
>Items are already decided and listed in each dungeon map
>Main antagonist seems to be some kind of shadowy figure resembling the Nightmare from Link's Awakening

Story of how this game would be played out based on the maps is open for community discussion. We have the graphics, the music, and the ability. If the entire community contributes, the maps could be put to good use.

***I am in no way quitting Link's Awakening Remastered even if this does turn out to get a good storyline. I don't care if it can be the best game ever for GB style. I AM NOT QUITTING LAR FOR THIS!

One comment I have for the game, however. I believe that the password system would have to go. Make this game have nothing to do with the other two or use creativity to link it differently with the other two.

Discussion / Ways to save your games
« on: February 25, 2009, 11:00:35 pm »
I want to be more optimistic about the way I save my games. Right now I know of only the ini file. (Well, how to use it anyway. I know about binary and array)

So what save types do you guys use, and what could I use that's better than the ini file?

Discussion / iPhone Applications
« on: February 24, 2009, 12:23:10 am »
I don't own an iPhone, so I have no idea where to go with this. What I do know is that recently I've heard more and more about homebrew apps for the iPhone, and that common programmers made them and made business from them.

Programmer? Hey, that's me!

So basically I wanted to find some info on this "homebrew app" stuff and see what I could do. But here's the catch: the internet is a dangerous place, especially for something I know nothing about. So this is why the topic exists. I want a quality source of info from the members here who actually OWN an iPhone or make apps for it.

Entertainment / Link's Awakening Discussion Topic

So we've all played LA or LADX right? We've seen the ending where Marin appears as a seagull is flying around. There is great speculation on whether Marin is the seagull and if Koholint really was a dream.

My theory is different from both, and it shoots down the seagull and real Koholint theory. The Wind Fish, at the end of the game, says this:

Quote
BUT, VERILY, IN BE THE NATURE OF DREAMS TO END! WHEN I DOST AWAKEN,
KOHOLINT WILL BE GONE... ONLY THE MEMORY OF THIS DREAM LAND WILL
EXIST IN THE WAKING WORLD... SOMEDAY, THOU MAY RECALL THIS ISLAND...
THAT MEMORY MUST BE THE REAL DREAM WORLD... ... ... ... ...

The Wind Fish himself says Koholint will be gone, but he also says it will exist in memory. There goes the real Koholint theory. The other thing I would like to point out is that the picture of Marin at the end of the game is a result of Link remembering her, and not a result of her wish to be a seagull.

Opinions? This is an open discussion topic, remember. If you have a theory of your own, why not present it?

Audio / [Request]Link's Awakening LttP Mix
« on: February 21, 2009, 03:05:02 pm »
Yeah...I need it for my game. Actually, I need a lot of things remixed for it. So if anyone would like to take on this project of mixing Link's Awakening music to LttP style, then go for it. I have no idea how, so...yeah.

Discussion / [Video Tutorial] How to convert maps to different styles
« on: February 21, 2009, 04:26:51 am »
This tutorial is for GIMP. If you use any other kind of image manipulation software, results are not guaranteed to be satisfactory. GIMP is free and can be downloaded here

The video is almost an hour long, but it explains very well. The example used is the Dream Shrine from Link's Awakening's Mabe Village.

The file can only be downloaded ten times, so it would be very helpful if those who download it can upload it again and post a new dl link.

Graphics / Oracle of Secrets Resources
« on: February 20, 2009, 12:13:50 am »
Wasn't too sure where else this would go...anyway, since I'm working on LA:Remastered, I looked through my files and thought I'd upload my Oracle of Secrets stuff. Just in case, you know, anyone else wanted to make it but wasn't sure where to get the goods. One thing to mention though:

The overworld maps were made by JonLeung of VGmaps.com. If used, he would like to be credited as well as the website VGmaps.com. There are also notes in the Data folder, possibly serving as a base for one to build a powerful story.

Graphics / Link's Awakening Remastered (Master Topic)
« on: February 15, 2009, 10:51:03 pm »
Hey all. I've done the math conversions for the area of each "screen", so I decided to begin mapping Mabe Village. Here's what I have so far, but it took an hour and a half. The whole thing will take days to finish at this rate. Let me know if I can make improvements to anything. I'll be reloading the image below with the newest "screen" until the entire village is done.

UPDATE: This topic has grown a lot since I first posted it. We now have two maps in the works with two styles. Link's Awakening in LttP, and Holodrum in MC.

UPDATE 2: There has been a mixup in the math conversions. The original scaled dimensions of the maps were 320x205. Xfixium pointed this out and the scalings have been corrected to 320x256. The maps that are already completed are in the process of being scaled yet again. (View page 21 on for correctly scaled maps)

Credits
Jeod (Feels weird crediting myself but meh) - Koholint
Niek - Koholint
Hoffy - Holodrum
Darklight - Holodrum
Shefali - Koholint
Xfixium - Holodrum & Koholint
LTGH - Koholint

Graphics Needed
Anything you think would be helpful for the Tail Cave dungeon.

UPDATE 3: The project has been put on hold until summer. If anyone else wants to pick up before then, do so.

UPDATE 4: http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/4729/koholint.png

UPDATE 5: http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/4729/koholint.png

Feedback / Weird Guests
« on: February 11, 2009, 02:26:56 am »
Call me crazy, but I think some of these guests are following me around! I'll be viewing some really old topic in a random page of a random forum, and then I'll go to the online list and BAM! A guest is viewing the same topic. It's happened a lot. Random topics that nobody would really look at either such as "random underlines?" in feedback.

WHAT THE **** IS GOING ON?

Audio / How do you tell when music is a certain style? (LttP, MC, etc)
« on: February 11, 2009, 12:21:32 am »
I know there are tempos like 3/4 time and whatnot, but I have no idea how to tell when a piece is on the spot or a bit off...of course there are many more factors like the instrument chips used when composing, timing of the piece, and the area it's being played in.

I suppose this is more of a question for Darklight, but it's open season.

Entertainment / Great. Now I can't play Banjo Tooie.
« on: February 01, 2009, 01:05:29 am »
It keeps freezing up on PJ64. I managed to get all the way to Terrydactyland, but now 'm trying to get my 25th jiggy from Witchyworld and the game freezes on every playthrough. What can I do to fix this? I'm using D8 for Jabo's graphics plugin because D6 sucks. Also using a PC controller.

Entertainment / ITT: We discuss the value of old games
« on: January 30, 2009, 03:35:12 pm »
I was just thinking about BK series and how much it might be worth factory sealed now, and damn. It's not much. But then I remembered the smallish and less-important GBA game they made and it's like 60 bucks new and sealed.

Looked up OoT N64 too, and it's 150 sealed.

Discussion / Zelda Towers
« on: January 03, 2009, 10:48:37 pm »
So my friend and I have been wanting to actually finish a game. So we gave up on the huge Zeldas for now and veered in the direction of simple platformer Zeldas. Castlevania came to mind, so we thought we might attempt it. There's not really a story yet...just looking for resources. (Also, sorry if the topic doesn't belong here...there's no forum for all game resources, IIRC)

Music: Zelda, but styled for Castlevania sidescroller feel.

Graphics: Mostly scenery. Searched the place, haven't found any. I already have Link, if anyone thought to attempt him. Zelda and Ganondorf too. (Courtesy Spriters Resource) But scenery is must.

Gameplay: MMF2 coding. We'll handle this ourselves. However suggestions are open once we can get a large enough resource base to work with.

Thank you!
