I looked for it in the manual but it doesn't tell how you can alter it in-game.
So, how can I alter it?  I just need it for UN Squadron for when you get shot down as the game slows down on the transition after the explosion animation.

pretty sure you can set it in code using some function to do with "room" (just try typing it in and see what pops up at the bottom), or you can just change it in the actual room editor under one of the tabs (but it sounds like this method doesn't suit you in your case)

According to the first link here: http://www.google.co.uk/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=1G1GGLQ_JAJP299&q=gamemaker+how+to+change+room+speed+in+code&btnG=Google+Search&meta=lr%3D&aq=f&oq=&qscrl=1#hl=en&lr=&safe=off&rlz=1G1GGLQ_JAJP299&qscrl=1&sa=X&ei=AgdtTbD5BMS8ccWwhccF&ved=0CBUQBSgA&q=game+maker+how+to+change+room+speed+in+code&spell=1&fp=6e7438af88efd7c8

You can just set it simple by using room_speed=whatever

Just guessing and seeing what does appear at the auto completion thing at the bottom is easy to do and I'm pretty sure it'd be in the manual somewhere.

Yeah, it is a tricky one to find, but the variable room_speed has been put under GML -> Gameplay -> Timing
