Title: OOT sprites in LTTP style
Post by: ALTTP Fan on May 06, 2012, 03:32:12 am
Hey guys, this thread will be where I'll upload all my LTTP style OOT sprites for MaJoRas amazing OOT map project. Check his project out here -
http://zfgc.com/forum/index.php?topic=36601.0 (http://zfgc.com/forum/index.php?topic=36601.0)

I aim to sprite most of OOT's objects and such from the outside child-Link world. I might have a go at dungeons and stuff later on.
Some objects like the Temple of Time and the Great Deku Tree have already been created in LTTP style perfectly by Master Yoshi, so I dont need to make those. Check out his fantastic work here -
http://zfgc.com/forum/index.php?topic=35669.0 (http://zfgc.com/forum/index.php?topic=35669.0)

DEMO of the current completed areas I have made -
(http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae253/skemekos23/demopic.png)

Editable(Requires GM7 pro) -

DEMO CONTROLS:

Enter Key = Next Room
BACKSPACE = Previous Room

Arrow Keys = Move Link

F4 Key = Toggle Fullscreen On/Off

1 Key = Start Rain Effect
2 Key = Turns the Rain intensity up. Keep pressing to increase further....
3 Key = Turns the Rain intensity down. keep pressing to decrease further....
4 Key = Toggles the Rain effect on and off. It remembers the intensity.

I will update this demo with each completed area I make as and when I make them.
Collisions are accurate to LTTP.
Again, BIG thanks goes to MaJoRa and Master Yoshi.

Anyway, onto the sprites. Please keep in mind that not all of the sprites I post are finished and I will be posting my work in progress. Any comments and critique are welcome.

oh my god this is awesome.... I will definitely be using a whole load of these sprites in the map.

The Hyrule Castle fountain is a much better representation than I could do, and the gate is awesome, very good job. I love the Kakariko incomplete house, and the well looks rather good. Though I am not entirely certain about the well yet, I will have to see how it looks in the project. The Triforce pad is rather cool, again I'll be using it.

I will be replacing some of my large tree stumps with yours, they're kind of cool. The windmill however I still have reservations on. It looks awesome... but I am thinking of the gameplay if this were a real game... and I cannot see how the player might get inside of it as they do.

You have the same reservations as I do lol Im still not quite sure on a lot of them but I think they make a good start.
I understand that you might not want to use all of my sprites so feel free to use whichever ones you like and if you have any suggestions like resizing then just let me know.
Any ideas how you would make the windmill look good and still work gameplay-wise? I might have a few ideas that I will share later on but it would be cool to hear your thoughts.

I redid my wishing well because it wasnt tiled properly so as a result its now smaller(which I like). I can make it bigger if you'd prefer though. I also made a few other small changes -
(http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae253/skemekos23/14-WISHINGWELL6REVISED-BASESPRITE.png)

The middle wishing well without the fence around it could be used as either an alternative or as the adult world version.
The Hyrule fountain is also not tiled properly(one pixel too big) so I need to redo that too. Ive also animated the water for it but I dont know how to create a GIF file and where to upload them to. If Anyone can help, that would be great.
I would like to see Master Yoshis take on the tall tree stumps. Im sure he could do a much better job.
The incomplete Kakariko house is actually the one Im most proud of, besides the Castle gate :)

Which one is best? 1, 2, 3 or 4?

Post by: DaSpirit on May 06, 2012, 04:38:44 pm
I had to look very close to find the difference between them. I would go with 2, number 4 and 3 look somewhat blurry and number 1 looks too minimal.
Title: Re: OOT sprites in LTTP style

I redid the wishing well again. @DaSpirit - I was also thinking 2, but wasnt sure. I think that might be the one I go with in future. For this edit I went with 4 though -
(http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae253/skemekos23/14-WISHINGWELL4REVISEDCHILDLINK.png)

Also redid the fountain -
(http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae253/skemekos23/13-FOUNTAIN-1.png)

Now onto some other sprites...

Dang I really like that fountain, Skeme. :) The blue seems a little... too darkish purple, though? Ah it might just be me.

Thanks man. :) The water uses the same pallet as used in LTTP though. I just used the standard Faery cave water tiles for the fountains water. Didnt even change the colour.

Looking great, are these reserved for those projects or for community use?(credit of course given)

@Whitay Im not sure actually. Im perfectly fine with them being used by everyone but some of them are edits of MaJoRas work so it might be better to ask him.

Anyway, here are some more improvements -

Lon Lon Ranch Stable Closed
(http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae253/skemekos23/38-LonLonRanchStableCLOSEDREVISED.png)

Hyrule Castle Gate Wide path 2
(http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae253/skemekos23/35-HyruleCastleMainGateREVISED.png)

And heres an idea I have for entering the windmill and using the cukoo to fly from the window -
(http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae253/skemekos23/34-NEWREVISEDSmallWindmill.png)

You enter the windmills middle floor from the little hut connected to the windmill and use some stairs inside the windmill to reach the top floor which contains the cukoo.
I know its not how its done in OOT but I think its impossible to accurately convert all sprites and gameplay elements from 3D to 2D. I think artistic freedom is needed in some cases like this.
Do you think this would work?

The sweet thing about the desert colossus was the big statue outside, expessially when you step out onto the hands. wouldnt that bigass statue(or atleast parts of it) have to be sprited for the game? also, the sides of the stairs wont blocked off. one more thing is there was an indent in the stone, like one or two tiles, then the entrance. yours looks good though, just naming some points in the game. XD looks good though! keep it up!

Yeah, I considered those things you mentioned and Im still deciding what to do about the big woman statue. I think it might be better to not include it?
Im not too great at spriting characters in LTTP style either lol
The blocked-off sides are a style choice of MaJora and a choice I think fits nicely with LTTP so I stuck with it.
Im not sure what you mean about the indented stones....I will check that out as soon as I can.

EDIT:
You mean something like this, right?

Thank you for your suggestions :)

Make the mockup a bit bigger, with taller cliffs in the back. The statue will be easier to visualize then.

Amazing pics! Thanks :) I actually sketched out the statue on grid paper earlier on from memory, so these will come in handy.
Those are treasure chests in each hand, right? How do you reach them? Its important for me to know so I can make my sprite work gameplay - wise.

From the sides of the cliff, look near the end of the video. Remember, the statue is missing the left side of its upper body due to erosion. You can see the arm is detached from the shoulder.

Nice one! Looks like its gonna be a pain in the arse to get it to work right though :( Its gonna take forever just to get it to look right I think...
Im gonna give it a go though and see how it looks. I think this is more Master Yoshi and DJ Venoms area though. They could do a much better job then I will.

Regardless of the statue, I have a different suggestion. Perhaps... The entrance could be made of something other than wood? Perhaps that's actually stone, but the part that's supporting the triforce, the door post things, look like wood to me, which makes the whole edifice look a bit cheap, in my opinion.
Title: Re: OOT sprites in LTTP style
Post by: ALTTP Fan on May 08, 2012, 06:59:27 pm
Good suggestion. I think stone would look better so I'll give it a go. Regarding the statue, Ive roughly mapped out the hands and Im thinking that the rest of the statue might not be needed because it wont be seen in game(unless the game contains the cutscenes or something)

The lobger arms will make him more flexible if you intend to use him in a Majora's Mask fashion and have him dance.

Ok, I think these ones below are the final versions(just undecided which head & hat I like best now ::)). Thanks to Jeod, I made two variations(one with normal arms, one with long) just incase someone wants to use it for a Majoras mask version.

Impressive. Not sure about the crates, but overall the ranch is very appealing.

Thanks man! It plays really nice in game too! :) Looks a lot better too.
Big thanks goes to MaJora for the main map work.
It took me a while to figure out why you posted those statue sprites but now I see that they have the perfect base! Thank you for pointing it out to me lol
I'll see what I can do.
Im actually quite happy with my crates but youre right, theres something about them. It tokk me AGES to get to where they are now though lol Any ideas how I can make them better? I do think they are ok for now though and much better than all the other attempts I made in the past.

Fishing pond WIP

Any critiques or suggestions? Should the pond be bigger for gameplay with the fishing rod?

The little hole looks wayyy to big. It should be a crack in the wall if i remember correctly. Also the water coming out looks to unnatural/copypasted. Try making it not go completly straight, and try to not make it look like a repeated line. Also not a fan of the area with the desk. Seems like that would need a lot of custom.. Or maybe im remembering it wrong.
Title: Re: OOT sprites in LTTP style

Heres the desk area -
(http://img826.imageshack.us/img826/4186/pondref.png)

And heres the crack -
(http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/6787/crackisbad.png)

As you can see, the crack is quite huge.
Is it the stairs and border that you dont like in the desk area? I added those because I thought it looked too plain without them. I dont like the colours on the whole thing though so maybe thats what you dont like.
I made a load of different variations and recolours on the whole desk area and will show a few tomorrow and see which one you guys like best.
The water coming from the hole uses a simple mod of the LTTP water tiles, but maybe if I shortened the little stream, it would look better? I'll try your suggestions though and see how it looks.
I should add that I like to put my own take on these things instead of recreating them 100% accurate to OOT, which explains things like the stairs in the desk area. :)

Hmm, it seems a little big when I first saw it (the pond itself). But maybe that's just me.
Title: Re: OOT sprites in LTTP style
Post by: ALTTP Fan on May 16, 2012, 04:07:25 pm
Yup. It does look quite big in the pics for some reason, but when youre walking around it in-game, it seems way too small. The pond in OOT was massive in comparison.
Im pretty sure that I should make it a bit bigger(about 2-4 tiles max) for fishing to be more like it was in OOT. In OOT, I remember having to find a good spot to get the bigger fish...even standing on the log and casting the rod from there. My pond is so small at the moment that you could just cast from anywhere and your rod would reach the middle of the pond.
Or do you guys think this gameplay element is not important to recreate? If not, then I will leave the pond at its current size because it really is quite small when in-game(which I actually like, but I have gameplay in mind too.)
Maybe I should share the gamemaker file so you guys can check it out for yourselves?

I dont like how the crack is just resized hole... If you look at the picture the whole wall had weird cracks and stuff. Idk. Maybe its just an opinion.

The aquarium should be on the top part of the counter, so you get a side view of the fish IMO. Not bad though! Clever use of the swamp vines :D
Title: Re: OOT sprites in LTTP style
Post by: ALTTP Fan on May 21, 2012, 11:08:54 pm
Thanks guys! :) I'll definitely look into changing the water hole into a crack and putting the aquarium at the top of the desk counter for a side-on view later on, but for now, here is the complete(for now), tidied up version(Fixed tiling errors and palette inconsistencies).
Theres still some minor tiling errors left to fix with the desk areas stone wall and Im still not sure about the colour pallet I used for the wall and floor tiles...but it will do for now I think.

Tileset
I actually had to make quite a few custom tiles to create this area -
(http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae253/skemekos23/PONDTILESET-1.png)

Animations
Again, a lot had to be custom made. I will give the recommended animation speed to be used in Gamemaker when using a 30fps room speed for your game.
Please note that the animations seen below are not the proper speed. In-game they will be slower if you use my recommended speed settings.

Just posting to see what's happening with this topic? These are amazing sprites, I've been looking forward to finding the time to shove 90% of these into my map project (and hands down man that fishing pond makes mine look like a 5 year old learning to draw xD).

Things I'd love to see you redo:
 - Platform in front of Jabu Jabu in Zoras Fountain
 - Goron City Entrance
 - Gerudo Training Grounds sprites
 - Entrance to the fishing grounds

I'd love to keep seeing more if you have time :)

Thanks, MaJoRa! I will definitely be continuing on with this and I am still aiming to finish all/as many areas as I can. I just like to have a break every now and then but I have a lot of fun doing these so I will always keep coming back to it.
Those areas you mentioned will definitely be given a go soon.
Next up however are Kakariko and the Graveyard sprites. I am also in the very early stages of working on the inside of the great Deku tree.

For now I have this demo of the current completed areas I have made -

Editable(Requires GM7 pro) -

Executable -

DEMO CONTROLS:

Enter Key = Next Room
BACKSPACE = Previous Room

Thanks man. :) I most likely wont be changing the main path size at the entrance, but I will make the whole entrance area look more narrow at a later stage, which should improve the look. Thanks for pointing it out, my friend.

Think shifting the tree and the house over left 2 or 3 tiles will help solve that problem.(of course the entire bottom  and parts of the top would have to be adjusted too)

LOL! Thanks, man! Yeah it was hard work indeed. Would've been impossible if not for MaJoRa's excellent map that I used as a base.
Im not particularly looking to make all the areas, but I do aim to make most/all custom sprites needed.

I love coming back here to look at you're sprites, you never fail to impress me. The gerudo tent? Genius! Kakariko is also looking mighty fine. I look at it and think 'that wouldn't fit in my map' still xD though. Guess I spent too much time playing Tetris with it ey?.
