Feedback / When I try to raise a user's karma
« on: April 15, 2012, 04:03:58 pm »
It gives me the page where it says "Karma Change, Applause" and "Reason for change". There is the text field next to that where I type the reason, and it worked for me just a few weeks ago. Right now though I can't actually click in the type field and write anything, nor can I hit submit. I tried it with negative karma and on different users as well.

Entertainment / Dark Souls
« on: April 12, 2012, 08:12:39 pm »
I got this game a month or so ago, and so far it's been the most entertaining gaming experience I've ever had. Skyrim was great as well, but it was far too easy and not very rewarding. Dialogue options are seriously lacking compared to Oblivion or any of the Fallout games. In Skyrim it also seems nobody reacts to events that happen in the game, generally speaking. Once I got to level 50 or something the game and it's similar but different fetch quests / dozens of unexplored similar but different caverns got old.

/ Skyrim rant, it is a beautiful game regardless.

Dark Souls!! Anyone else really into this game? I'm actually having trouble figuring out how to put down a summon sign and summon other players to help me fight this one boss. Taurus Demon, that is. The online features are some of the most original and innovative I've ever seen, as are the gameplay mechanics in general.

I tried summoning someone to my world but instead I got summoned. I helped them kill their Taurus Demon anyways, but I'd really like to figure this out. I do now realize that I have to be human, but before I waste a humanity I just want to be sure. Is the white sign soapstone used for summoning and being summoned?

Discussion / [idea] The Legend (Life) of an Octorok
« on: April 10, 2012, 01:48:37 am »
I have just about zero knowledge on how to go about actually making a game, but thought this would be neat. Player takes control of an octorok. GBC graphics. It'd be more RPG oriented than Zelda games. The player would start with just one move: spitting rocks, and one heart. Leveling up you could add a few stats to evolution, health (each stat gives you a piece of heart), and armor.

Evolution could lead to upgrades like being able to swim, spit rocks farther, stronger rocks (deal more damage), new attack types (like lunge attack or something), and possibly the weirdest one I thought of: # of eggs laid. When you reach an evolution checkpoint for increasing the # of eggs laid, you can have more spawn to fight with!

If you find another female octorok you can mate with them. There'd be certain times when all male octoroks are looking for a mate, so there will be dozens of male competition to kill, and few females. By mating with a female she will follow you around for a bit, and if you protect her and keep her alive she will birth your children. At that point she leaves you, and you have a number of tiny octobabies to fight by your side. They will be small and die quickly, but can swarm enemies and be super helpful and awesome.

When a male notices your female is pregnant, they will try and kill her. It's a rough life for an octorok, but they don't want more male competition, so they kill her only to kill all your unborn spawn. Through evolution you will get abilities to reach new areas with larger, harder enemies. There could even be a town full of Hylian guards. The goal is just to get as many points as you can, by killing things.

Link could even be a random encounter who's really strong and has good A.I., all his items, etc.

Entertainment / Anyone see the movie The Fountain?
« on: April 08, 2012, 08:24:58 am »
It's a really great film, although the reviews of the movie are pretty evenly split between people who hated it (most likely because they didn't understand it and the movie does not spell out all the answers) and people who loved it. I love the fact that the movie is very open ended, so there can be varied theories on what exactly went down. It also has some gorgeous visuals.

Just thought I'd share one of my favorite live moments I missed out on because I was TWO in 1997. If you've got some time to kill check this out. Some people obviously just hate it and think it's garbage because the improvisation can sometimes lead to them all being lost in the music, and other times it can produce this.

Anyone else here playing Morrowind? I've never played it and needed a break from Skyrim. I'm a level 47 in Skyrim, so I figured I'd take a break and try the older games. I started with the second one, Daggerfall since it's a free download on their site. Unfortunately it's hard as balls. When I finally did get out of the too hard first dungeon I got my ass kicked in every quest I tried taking. The towns are all the same, and the overworld is real-life sized and not as real-life interesting. Way too !@#$% big of a game for having no interesting content.

So I got Morrowind and it's awesome. Also pretty hard compared to starting in Skyrim, but I like the challenge.

In the words of a youtube commenter:

"This is a handicapped gypsy playing black music with a gay violinist in the middle of nazi occupied France. What kind of nerve (balls) do you have to have to pull off that? There is just not a finer musician on the planet."

One of his last recordings, he had started playing with electric guitars for the first time around here after being hesitant to try one apparently.

This one actually has good video, and audio too. Most of the videos I find of him the sound quality is crap.

Audio / A medley of bird songs, solo acoustic by me
« on: November 20, 2011, 05:14:31 am »
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTKrdRLswQk

First time uploading to youtube as well, so the lovely bird picture vanishes after a bit :(
Recorded in garageband on multiple tracks with my semi-acoustic Taylor. Not sure if anyone here is a Grateful Dead / Phish / Beatles fan but... give me some feedback even if you don't know the song.

Birdsong (Grateful Dead) -> And Your Bird Can Sing (Beatles) -> Blackbird (Beatles) -> Tela (Phish) -> Birdsong Reprise (Grateful Dead)
The song Tela by Phish is part of an avante-garde album their guitarist made that tells some strange fantasy story. Tela is a revolutionary working to overthrow the King Wilson, and she uses three legged birds called spotted stripers.. Kind of obscure bird reference, but I love the song and it starts in the same key as Blackbird so hey ::)

Discussion / Super Mario Bros Blitz (Old project I'd like to revive)
« on: November 20, 2011, 05:01:39 am »

That's a mock-up just showing off the tiles me and some other ZFGCers made, and beautiful Mario and animations, Bowser, and Koopa that uma made. Found all these old sprites and got nostalgic. Unfortunately I can't program... so anyone want to help make this game? It was originally going to be made in BlitzMax by Soapy but never happened. I can't animate sprites very well either... but the sprites I have is enough for a good start.

I think it'd be cool to just keep the project simple and tiny, at least at first if anyone does offer to program for me.. A remake of the original 1-1 would be awesome.

Discussion / LoZ game concept
« on: October 13, 2011, 01:37:46 am »
Been a while since I thought up one of these, but been tossing around ideas. I just finished Majoras Mask for the first time and I'm working my way through Wind Waker now.

Basically to accomodate for it being a fan-game it'd have only two dungeons. Solves the problem of making an overwhelming fan-game project so many have.. I was thinking it would have a main town area somewhere, and focuses mostly on the problems of the people and the town itself. So though there'd only be two dungeons it would have many side quests for heart pieces, bottles, main items, mini dungeons, etc. Most of these side quests would start in the town, but have to be solved elsewhere.

More of an open world Zelda game would be good I think, and the player doesn't start off with some huge heroic task of saving the world or a Princess or anything, but instead just sets out to try and solve the main problem of the town... I had an interesting idea story-wise, that it could be something like a town with a crumbling economy and huge unemployment (America Town Hyrule?) or a drought, or some combination.

And so there could then be side quests to get economy booming in the town somehow, or find jobs for people, stuff like that. The two main dungeons would probably be part of a bigger quest. Whoever the antagonist is would be from a larger more prosperous town far away and the main dungeon would be there. They are planning on expanding their town, or building a resort maybe right where Link's town is, or a railroad that needs to go right through the tiny failing town... It's a cliche, but not one seen in Zelda really.

The idea of the two dungeons is that the player would progress back and forth between them, being able to complete only parts of it at a time based on whatever items you have at that point. And side quests are required sometimes to get items needed to get farther in a dungeon. The main dungeon could actually not just be in the prosperous town, but the dungeon could be the town itself. Mayor's Office being the central part, and walls all around the city. Citizenship required or you get attacked... Maybe some side quest to buy fake citizenship at some point, but usually just sneak into the dungeon through catacombs under the town. Just tossing around ideas at this point (and probably now way to ever make it, but still fun)

How's it sound?
And now for something completely different:

Hey everyone, glad to see this place still alive (zordans funky immortal grass cutters?)
I just finished Majoras Mask for the first time on Moldormas N64 (He only got past Odalwa). Easily one of the best games I've ever played!

Making me wish they'd make a remake of it, or Master's Quest or something... It could have a Spider House in Snowhead and Ikana instead of just the other two areas or something. I was thinking also it could have another place to use the Giant's Mask, instead of just on Twinmold. Like a side quest Giant's Dungeon with enormous enemies.

Just felt like making a post for posting's sake. How's everyone doing? Any good theories on the Happy Mask Salesman? (its obv. shigeru) :P

Discussion / Brutally realistic World War I FPS
« on: January 11, 2010, 05:56:42 am »
Unfortunately I will most likely never in my life have the chance to make something like this. But it is just a concept after all. There's so many things about trench warfare I would like to do in a WWI CoD game or any other good shooter. Obviously there would be missions where you would be a machine-gunner, but other more interesting ones would be stealthy night-time trench raiding (<link btw).

Am I the only one who sees potentially very fun gameplay in sneaking into enemy trenches at night with clubs, trench-knives, hatchets, and brass knuckles and silently beating the Germans to death? To get into the front line trenches you'd have to wait until you see the night patrols light up a cigarette. Then you wait until they're facing away and sneak up behind them to club the !@#$% out of them. You also are given a pistol and some grenades, but warned not to use them unless told. It's the late 1800s, early 1900s. Those pistols aren't silence motherfuckers in this game. They're loud motherfuckers. Brass knuckles are your new silenced pistols. Thoughts? :P

Entertainment / Saboteur impressions?
« on: December 31, 2009, 08:53:16 pm »
I got it as a Christmas present this year, and I just started playing last night. I wasn't actually going to pick this one up because of the generally mild review scores I've seen. Having played it now I can say it's pretty awesome. It's like GTA in a lot of ways, only set in World War 2. I think that's pretty cool. Unoriginal maybe, but it sure is a lot more fun at the moment than replaying GTA IV. I even enjoy listening to the radio when I'm driving around due to the old-fashioned soundtrack. So the Saboteur just made me trust game critics less than I already did! ;)
