Title: [Submission] Forest Maze
Post by: BlazeBigBang on June 18, 2012, 10:10:19 pm
In order to arrive to the Kokiri Forest, Link will have to cross the Forest Maze. This place is created by the Forest Cog, and once Link gets it, he won't have to cross it again. Is an ilussion created by the Kokiri Magic to protect the cog.

The maze will be a long and A LOT of dead ends, in which there probably will be monsters.

Interesting idea, reminds me of the Lost Woods.  Could you sketch out a layout?

Sure. I think may take some time. Luckily in 20 minutes.

Don't rush it, you know we're gonna criticize the hell out of it ;)

Sorry, I don't have plenty of time now. It's a sketch done with paint. Green things are trees the player won't be able to walk across. I'll try to work it tomorrow.

Cool, I can see this being pretty cool once we add some overlay effects and such in game.  I think there need to be more dead ends that aren't on the edge of the map though.

we can always grab one screen and make it a lost woods type area, depending on how you go you will have to restart over again.
in some maps you might get the next areas locked and some enemies spawned, or a small mini puzzle. that way them ap will be smaller : )

The Lost Woods the only thing that they have is about the sound you must hear to get to the place. It's not that hard. I can make it bigger, it was a quick skectch.

What happens if Link returns to this spot after acquiring the Forest Cog?
Title: Re: [Submission] Forest Maze
Post by: BlazeBigBang on June 19, 2012, 12:14:02 pm
Well, that's the point. The maze was done to protect the cog. When Link gets the cog, the illusion of the Forest Maze will dissapear.

I think HR means what will be there in its place?

A huge open grassland.

Is there anything the player can do there?

I was thinking in a possible sidequest related to make a forest grow, for the Deku to live there too. Link is rewarded with a piece of heart after achieving this.

Yea, I meant what would replace it haha.  Turning it into a simple location for a sidequest sounds like a good idea.

Okay, I kinda mixed about it.

1) The GDD already mentions that you need to cross the Deku Swamp to get into the Kokiri forest. So this would clash.

2) If it is long and a lot of dead ends then it would take up a lot of room on the world map. At least it would be large enough to consider it the world map design. We could make it that it all happens during a transition from the swamp to the forest, but then it can't be turned into a grassland overworld area with sidequests.

My advice: Do not make this a new area that is not in the GDD. Make this as the concept for Kokiri Forest itself. You have the maze that leads to the dungeon and once you get the cog it turns into a regular forest. And all the other stuff will become available such as Syrup's potion shop.

Is already part of the Kokiri Forest. Do you remember from OoT, the village? It'd be something like that: when Link first crosses the area, it will be an ilussion; when Link gets the cog, the illusion will dissapear. This ilussion was active as long the cog wasn't retrieved. After that, a sidequest related with the king of the deku will  make some deku appear her. At the beginning, it'll have a couple of shops, and some trees growing, but as long Link keeps helping the king, more deku will arive and begin bussines and that. To explain it better, have you played Pokemon Black or White? In the White Forest/Black City, you needed to get people to make the grass grow, and buildings to appear. Something like that will be here. The king will tell you to do something, and then another thing, and then another, and like that, until the town thrives. Of course, this side will require of completing some other temples.

I see this as kind of a link between the swamp and the forest.

Exactly. The kokiri wanted that the guy who deserved th cog to get it.

I'll get a new layout for the Forest Maze. I'll upload it when I finish it.

The little skulls means enemies; the little rectangles means chest with rupees.

Alright, this looks ok.  Before I say anything else, could you do two more things?

1. Post a thread with a design of the area AFTER this maze vanishes
2. Post details on any sidequests that are related to this area afterwards.  I think you said you wanted to make one for it, so go for it! :D

So, I make another map, with an open grassland area? And then I make a side-quest topic related about what I wanted to do?

yessir!  It's a grassland, so it shouldn't take much effort, but it'll help us visualize what should be there :)

'Kay. I'll upload the drawing in half an hour, or a bit more. My sister is using the PC with the scanner, so I can't upload the map yet.

EDIT: here is how it looks after completing the Forest Temple.

ermm...not exactly what I had in mind...if I wanted that, I wouldn't have had to ask...

This area has to be more than just a dead field, especially considering your side quest.  Can you show how this would look when populated and such?

Sorry, I misunderstood XD. I'm too tired to draw again, so I'll work it on computer. I'll upload it when I finish.

I approve of the maze, but I don't know what I think of the town layout yet.  Waiting for other comments.

tight butthole, I kind of dislike the idea of the town, so I'm going to stear clear of it so I don't accidentally make any rude comments or vague responses.

Well, the layout can be totally changed. I don't care how the houses and all that are organized.

I know this is a bit late, but I didn't notic it sooner. The Lost Woods in ALttP was the kind of woods that you are suggesting.

The foret maze is interesting and definitely a keeper, however what comes after I am afraid is not. The forest maze is either in the swamp or the forest, making it a grassland kind of diminishes the swamp or forest area it is in. It is a swamp connecting to the forest in the GDD.

The giant Link statue kinda goes against the character of Link. To me Link is always a person that would help someone without the need for global recognition. The stage at the top of the map is also blocking the path towards Kokiri Forest, unless Kokiri Forest's layout changes as well. Finally the map with all the houses on it seems smaller then the maze was to me.

Perhaps replacing it with more of a marsh would be more appropriate?  Swamps and marshes typically can go together.  But the town idea I think would need to be changed.  Can you come up with another side quest?

I guess that here can be some mini-games, sidequests, and all that. I mean, people with which you talk, and they begin side-´quests

There's also the option of having it not magically transform so violently, right? I mean, we've seen this in zelda games with ALTTP's Lost Woods, and the Deku Swamp from Majora's mask, where they kind of transformed, but really they just became easier to traverse. Still the same basic layout, but obstacles such as poison, fog, enemies, whatever went away, and friendly NPCs came in. Not necessarily a whole town full of them.

Perhaps we have a maze-like, foggy marsh that is difficult to traverse and full of enemies, and is so maze like that it's like the lost woods in OoT where you can get teleported out by being lost. But after beating the forest temple, becomes more stable, the fog lifts, and a few fishermen move in or something smaller than a whole town?

That's just an idea, and my opinion.

I like this. I'll try to sketch a new layout with your feedback. Thanks Max ;)!

Sorry I'm late been busy. =P

I like the maze layout! I've never really been good at designing them but yours seems to be good. Also I like Max's idea! I think it'll be great if you added it in. =) The village idea is nice, but it seems a little strange. =P Good luck with anything you're still planning! =D

This post has been kind of forgotten, right? Well, I decided to do what Max said. I'm leaving the file attached for anyone who wants to see it. The blue thing is a river, and, at the beginning just a river. After beating the second temple, a deku with a boat will appear, and will offer Link to take him.

I liked the minigames in the swamp in MM. Shooting range for quiver upgrades, maybe. Use it with a 'swamp tour' system, so as the levels progress Link has to shoot faster targets, from a moving boat.

Ignoring the fact that this is a late reply, I like the idea of a boat taking Link for a ride. And I especially like the idea being mixed with a archery mini-game. =)

I didn't catch where you posted a file with the layout of your swamp, you referenced it in a post on the last page, but it wasn't there.

And just so I understand, you're right now suggesting a maze-like marsh with a river winding through and many enemies, but after the forest temple is completed, fog lifts, some enemies leave, and NPCs move in, including a Deku with a boat who will help you traverse the area quickly?

This pretty much. However, I'd like to do a new design for the river, so the mini-game of arrow gallery in the river works better.
