Discussion / Character design
« on: February 15, 2007, 04:34:31 am »
Yeah, I'm horrible at this. Anybody know anything about character design? All my characters always end up being too weird or too normal. Just wondered if anybody had some tips on creating interesting video game characters.

Feedback / Champion Goldfish?
« on: February 15, 2007, 03:06:22 am »
This may belong in Zelda Talk, I don't know yet.
I looked at my title and saw that I was a "Champion Goldfish". Made me laugh, but what exactly is a champion goldfish? If it's a Zelda reference (And I haven't played or beaten all the games), then i don't know what it is and this should probably be moved. Otherwise...  ???

Audio / Music formats
« on: February 14, 2007, 02:01:10 pm »
MIDI music's been a stape of games since the earliest games that actually featured music, and it's done admirable for wuite a while. But now, the overall quality of games is getting better, with improvements to graphics, sound effects, space, etc. and people are starting to expect the music to be better as well. Do you guys think that, in our independant games, it's worth sacrificing the small filesize and flexibility of MIDIs for the better quality of MP3s or other similar formats?

Graphics / John Lennon pixelart (1967-style)
« on: February 04, 2007, 07:09:51 pm »

Based on the photography from the Sgt. Pepper booklet.

Comments please. Criticism if you want, but I'm quite pleased with it as is.

His left shoulder is solid colour on purpose. Don't get mad at me for that.

Debates / Religious debates - things we simply cannot live with.
« on: January 22, 2007, 04:37:36 pm »
Ah, hello. So, posts in the "door-to-door atheists" topic are appearing again. Well, they've always been appearing, but whatever. Oh, and notice something? The topic was originally about the idea of actual door-to-door atheists. Now, it's quickly become yet another debate on whether Christianity could possibly be true, with all on one side sticking to the usual arguments (logically, there's no way of proving it, so why do it?), and the other side is too (we truly believe it and do have faith in it, so you can't make us change).

Also, people are stupid. Everyone's arguing from a very, very limited perspective. Nobody gets anywhere at all. And one reason is, people are making assumptions that are not only absurd to make in ordinary life situations, but even more so in a debate. Like, anyone who doesn't believe in God is an atheist/satanist/sinner, or everyone who does condones all church actions including those that are clearly wrong. It horrifies me to go into these topics and see smart people passionately arguing, and being entirely stupid about it.

Another dumb thing? Swearing and getting all mad in your posts. It only destroys the credibility of your argument to the reader because, honestly, you come off as being unstable and crazy. Also, randomly inserting insulting, biased, unfounded comments like "well, it doesn't matter what I believe because you're going to hell". Well, I'm sure that convinced them to become a Christian. We're certainly loving, aren't we? No. Now, I know that it's really very very unlikely that anyone can be convinced into religious faith anyway, but one purpose the argument does serve is to help people clear up their own beliefs, inspire other people, and give people of another view an insight into what we believe. So no matter what you believe, argue well and justifiably to give a true insight, a properly presented insight, into your beliefs, and not just a glimpse of the bad side of your character.

Graphics / Request a sprite. :) No, you.
« on: January 11, 2007, 08:20:25 pm »
Yeah, I'm taking requests for sprites. I really enjoy spriting and want to keep improving, so hopefully you guys'll have some interesting requests for me. :)

So, here's the deal. You can request anything you like, even Zelda sprites (I put this in misc. sprites since it could encompass both, but if people continue to request Zelda sprites more than misc. sprites and it seems appropriate, I'll have a mod move it or something), but here are some rules about what you are allowed to request:

  • I'm not doing anything too enormous or whatever. If it's bigger than 150x150, I probably won't do it. You can request specific dimensions if you want, but I'm the artist and if the sprite just doesn't "work" with those boundaries, I'll do what I need to to make it good.
  • If you want it in a specific style, give me an example. You can't say "do one in WarioLand 2 style", because I'll consider your request invalid. You'd have to give me a valid example of a sprite that typifies the style of WarioLand 2, or whatever style you want. I'll use only that sprite as a reference, so it's your responsibility to get a good one. If you say LTTP or MC, I'll know what you mean. :) Don't say GB, though, say OOS/OOA/LA, because GB means Gameboy, and Gameboy games have loads of different styles. I'll consider your request invalid if you do.
  • If you want a specific color style, describe it. "Bright, vivid colors"/"Dull, soft colours"/"Mnimalistic colours", etc. If you want it in monochrome, that's fine, but if you want it in a specific shade like Sepia-tone, orange, etc., say so, because otherwise I'll just do black-white-grey.
  • No sprite sheets. I will only do 1-frame sprites, nothing else.
  • Multiple requests are allowed, but not at the same time, and not until the slot list that your first request was in is empty/replaced. Also, don't try to skirt my rules by requesting multiple sprites, (eg "mc-style mario crouching plz" and "mc-style mario mid-jump plz", which is obviously an attempt to trick me into making multiple "frames" of the same sprite), so, basically, no variations on sprites previously requested unless it's reasonable. If you do this, I won't take any more requests from you.
  • If you want to use it/them for something, state so in your request, and I'll approve/deny as I see fit.
  • If you make a request while the slots are full, I will consider your request invalid. You'll have to re-request later, I won't even read those requests.

Here are the request slots:
  • Slot 1: cb43569 - Tarin
  • Slot 2: Bludleef - Wolf link
  • Slot 3: empty

Audio / Vocoding singing?
« on: January 11, 2007, 01:47:15 am »
I'm really new to this junk, but I've been attempting to make singing sound "robotic" using a computer. Vocoding, of course, matches the form of one sound to that of another, or something like that. So, vocoding my voice singing gives a result with the tune of whater my carrier is, rather than my modulator, my singing voice.

Anybody know how to actually do what I'm trying to?

Entertainment / Wii controls for older games?
« on: December 26, 2006, 09:46:00 pm »
Normally i wouldn't care about this sort of thing, but I just discovered yesterday, (Christmas, uh-huh) that even though I haven't been allowed video game consoles in the past, there's a very real possibility that I'll be allowed to buy one in a number of months. Since I won't be able to for a little while, though, and by that time the Wii's availability for a standard price will have risen, I have my sights set on getting a Wii sometime.

Nintendo's made the great decision to support backwards-compatability with the GameCube and the ability to download emulated versions of classic games. But the Wii remote only has 4 buttons besides + and - (or did they change those?), and the gameCube controller has upwards of 7 if you include the C-stick. The N64 has upwards of 5 incluing the C-buttons, and the SNES having over 4. How si the Wii going to properly play these games? Has it been revealed? Or are they going to rely on the classic controller or other alternate controllers?

I had a sudden urge to sprite something, so... I did. :)

Discussion / Old Zelda game
« on: December 22, 2006, 07:07:51 pm »
Found this on my harddrive while cleaning it out. Reeally old Zelda game attempt of mine. Worth a play for laughs, though. And for people who hate me to laugh their heads off at me.

Was named "The Legend of Zelda - Millenia Quest". Don't ask.

Feedback / Spell Checking is acting strange
« on: December 22, 2006, 05:39:46 pm »
The Spell Check functioning has been doing weird things. Rather than highlighting wrong words in yellow with red text, adn cgiving suggestions as normal, it picks entire sentences or more out fo the text, highlights 'em, and sticks 'em up top, making the whole thing bloody useless. Here's what I mean:

I'm using FF 1.5.0.9, although Spell Check stopped working when I was still using 1.5.0.8, which it had worked under for me before.

Graphics / Custom Link sprite
« on: December 22, 2006, 04:30:21 pm »
Some of you may have seen this when I posted it a month or so ago. I've been working on it, tweaking it, making it better and better, and here's where I'm at by now:

It's for a game project of mine, so don't use. And yes, progress is going very slowly, you may think, if I posted this a number of months ago and it still isn't done. Well, I'm being a perfectionist about it, because I want to make a perfect game. So, comments, criticism, anything you got, I want to hear it. And yeah, I used to have a walking animation, but I scrapped it, because the legs looked kind of weird. Told you I was being perfectionist.

« on: November 20, 2006, 05:50:59 pm »

The problem is I have no idea where to begin. If anyone si any good with RSS, or whatever is needed to do this, I'd really appreciate some help. Thanks.

Anyone else seen these yet? Maybe they're old hat, but i've never seen one before, so.. yeh.

Suprisingly, they link to http://wii.nintendo.com/ rather than http://www.wii.com/ , though.

Other Discussion / Best Mario fangame I have ever played
« on: November 17, 2006, 12:57:58 am »
OK, those who frequent SheezyArt will have already seen this.. it's a Mario-based fangame series called Bullet Bill. The creator recently released Bullet Bill 2, and it is, I must say, the best Mario fangame I have ever played. Especially in terms of originality. It's kinda like helicopter, only a lot cooler.

But first - here is a link to the original Bullet Bill. Play it first, seriously - one for the old-skool graphics and two becxasue playing Bullet Bill 2 afterwards will show you just how good it is.

So. The original Bullet Bill:
http://www.sheezyart.com/view/721940/

and finally, the game itself, Bullet Bill 2:

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. :P

Coding / [GM6] External data?
« on: November 16, 2006, 11:48:39 pm »
Anyone know of any methods/links to sites with methods of storing external data? And I don't just mean having GM load sprites, sounds, etc from external sprite/sound/etc. files, I mean using .dat files or the like. Thanks, guys. :)

Feedback / Obsessive locking?
« on: November 07, 2006, 03:31:26 pm »
Lately I've noticed that the mods are quite obsessive about locking. While this does seem to be a good way of preventing gravedigging, which is another problem (albeit related), I feel that mods are often to quick to say a topic is "done" and lock it, when there has been no report or request for it to be locked. After all, the topic starter himself has the ability to remove or lock his/her own topic, so unless it is obvious that the topic NEEDS to be locked, I don't see why it has to be.

And on the issue of gravedigging, in many cases, people are far too fanatical about the whole NO-GRAVEDIGGING! thing. Someone can easily post in a topic to bring up a valid and still-relevant point, be it gravedig or otherwise. The only gravedigs that are reall a problem are ones that are either pointless or no longer relevant.

And while mods seem to be locking left and right, they sometimes slack off on other things. I noticed it took a long time for some games in Early Production and Ideas to be moved after a post had been made in the "If your topic neds to be moved" to be moved, though I would assume that would be a topic mods should check often. Granted, it now says to PM Kleaver instead, but at the time, it was being mostly ignored.

On an unrelated note, I, and probably other members, would appreciate it if when in a flaming topic, rather than deleting all the flaming posts, mods could just delete most and then edit a post so as members reading it (or that part) for the first time could get the gist of it? Often, I have been confused when reading topics where mods have deleted posts and not explained themselves.

Audio / *FINISHED!* Village theme
« on: October 19, 2006, 02:25:30 pm »
OK, so after my 'Ode to ZFGC' topic, everybody probably thinks that I really can't compose music for crap. But please, just treat that separately, because it is a load of crap. :P

I've been working on some music for my Zelda fangame, and I just finished a village theme, most likely Link's starting village:
http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/6/13/65315/village-happy2-vfinal-fix-dist-slower-lamb-fix.mid

What do you think? C+C if you have any.

This is exclusive for my game and may not be used by anybody else without written permission by me. By downloading, you agree not to use it in any way not agreed to between you and me.

EDIT: Just realized that I stole a bit from Dayjo's song. I apologize, I assure you it wasn't intentional, I will fix it immediately.
EDIT #2: Fixed. :)
EDIT #3: Slowed down a teensy weensy bit, and made less ambient.
