GraphicsGale. Google it. I believe you need the full version for gif making. But it is very usefull, and very simple, with a simple interface like mspaint.

If you don't have the money to buy it, pm me and ill find you a crack for it (which will take you like 2 seconds to run and then you got the full version)

Was anyone into GIF-making in the days of Microsoft Gif Animator? It came bundled with Microsoft Image Composer, which used to be part of office.

It was a very, very small program with everything you needed to make a gif. I believe you can get it for free now it's discontinued. There is only one disadvantage, which is that you can't set a custom colour-pallet.

I think you can't save gifs, you can make them but not save them :P yeah, I recomend Graphic Gale, I use it to make all.. It has layers Function something nor commont in animations program.

I actually use that program for most of my GIF needs, and it's served me well.  My only complaint is that creating an animation when each frame is an individual file is a pain in the butt, as you have to start from the bottom and insert each one manually in reverse.  Otherwise it works fairly well.

If I need more power, I go with GIF Construction Set Professional.  It's shareware, but almost all of the features work even after the trial period ends, and all you get is a nag screen upon opening and closing the program.  For as seldom as I use it, I can deal with it.  In fact, the "DanTheMan" LED sign in my sig was made with this program, and really didn't require more than a couple of clicks and keystrokes to create.

Sure you can, you just had the free version. With the full version you can do whatever you please, and there is a 30-day free trial period, then you gotta pay like $10.00 to buy it, or be a loser like me and just go to any crack site and grab a keygen, input it, and have unlimited access to the program.

It's actually really good for a lot of things, even if you only plan to make GIF's with it. It has a lot of the basic features of photoshop, like layers, custom brushes, custom pallets, etc. Plus the animator built into it is unmatched for animating sprites and such. With its "onion skin" function, it allows you to see a semi transperant image of the previous frame in you're current frame, so you can aline the images nicely.

Go hear, then check out the "features" section at the top for all the features and some little screens. Then go to download, and select the 30-day free trial on the right side. Even if you choose not to buy it, and not to crack it (which takes like 2 minutes) you can still use it for 30 days.

This might sound weird, but since I usually with with bitmaps when spriting, I use Microsoft Front Page (which I use to make my website) to convert bitmaps into gif files without any of the color saturation problems. It even works great to make transparent gifs.

But animated PNG files are very uncommon and not widely supported.  Same thing with tranparency support in PNG files, which is only just now becoming more supported (as I believe IE7 has better support for it than IE6).
