Project of the Month - January 2009

Ocarina of Time 2D

Forum Topic | Site Page

Developer: ahmio

Ocarina of Time is considered to be one of the greatest Zelda and overall games of all time. And without it, Zelda Fan Game Central would not exist. A two-dimensional Ocarina of Time fan game and its popularity are what began this place and ever since then other games of the same persuasion have appeared here ever so often.

It is by coincidence that January's Project of the Month is an OoT2D attempt. The project was chosen for this award because over the past month it has had frequent updates and interest. In addition, those updates have included screens, demos, etc. The project has received a bit of interest and for a new user to these forums the project is doing alright. If anything, Ocarina of Time by ahmio has for at least the month of January shaken part of the development here out of the doldrums.

Game Story/Plot

"As a young boy, Link is tricked by Ganondorf, the King of the Gerudo Thieves. The evil human uses Link to gain access to the Sacred Realm, where he places his tainted hands on Triforce and transforms the beautiful Hyrulean landscape into a barren wasteland. Link is determined to fix the problems he helped to create, so with the help of Rauru he travels through time gathering the powers of the Seven Sages." - Zelda.com

Developer Q & A

What do you think of this award?

    Pretty nice!

So why did you choose to make Ocarina of Time 2D?

Cause everyone else that tried it failed... lol.

Who would you consider to be the biggest inspiration for the project, Nintendo for making the original or TheRealMethuselah for showing that it could be made into a fangame?

    TRM.

In terms of updates, how is it that you are able to show off so many so frequently?

I just make it look like so much... >.<

What update thus far are you most proud of?

    Probably the Deku Tree.

What game mechanic or feature are you looking forward to working on? Water Temple?

    Epona!!!!

Do you worry about the GML code getting inefficient or buggy?

    No. Not really.

Have you run into any limitations in Game Maker that have proved frustrating?

Yes. The Tile Editor. They should make it as it was in GM5.

In terms of the graphics, were you always set on LTTP or did you think about venturing into different styles?

I thought about MC style for a bit....

Is there anything on the project that the community could help out on?

YES!!! Graphics and music would help a lot!

This project is interesting because it shows that there is still life in ZFGC's fan game making community. Seeing as how a lot of members neglect fan games now, this will hopefully inspire a new trend at ZFGC. Good work, Ahmio. You're doing something that many people failed to do.

The game doesn't look too bad and is a great attempt that some other people failed at. I do look forward to seeing this project grow and it could be completed if enough time and effort is put into making it.
