lol, all of those, plus indie-folk, alt-folk, jazz, bebop, swing, dreampop, pop-punk, hardcore punk and post-punk. Also, though this doesn't describe the music - just the lyrics - lit-rock, ironic and post-ironic are awesome.

Everyone, why are you saying so broad genres? Well, except for the sub-genres of folk it's like "I like punk", "I like metal", "I like pop". While that's mainly directed to everyone else but Pyru and Kame. Here's some directed to them:

I mean, Jazz... it's soooo much and so different. And hardcore punk the same. You can't compare Sex Pistols (60s) with Minor Threat (80s) and with whatever there's today (I think it ended in the 80s actually, but continued in other genres). Indie Rock, are you talking about 80s and early 90s Dinosaur Jr./Sebadoh/Pavement or are you talking about 00s Franz Ferdinand, Interpol etc. or even the just "indie-style" bands like Killers, Razorlight or whatever (which mostly actually are not indie at all >_>). Hell, indie rock can even be a collective term for a lot of other unrelated genres mentioned (maybe even all of them o_O).

Kame, I'm also wondering what kind of Shoegazer you listen to. The classic dream-poppy one with MBV and Slowdive etc. or the later scene which mixed with Britpop and became more like a revival of 60s pop? I prefer the classic one, but also some of the better new scenes (Newgaze). Lol, as long as it sounds like beautiful dreamy noise out of tune, I love it. :P

Rage Against the Machine. They should be a genre of their own!
You mean nu-funk-metal? :P

BTW, I'm also big on burlesque, vaudeville, sunshine pop, vocal group, jam, 50s rock, jazz, fusion, formalist rock, avant-garde, blues rock, some pop-punk, reggae, and rockabilly, although i don't listen to those genres as much as I do the ones in my other post. 'cept blues rock and vocal group.

Most people don't know the specific names for genres, venus, including me in some areas. Like indie rock.. there are some clear differences, like the folk revival and post-punk revival in the indie music scene, but then there's the generic alt-sounding indie rock band, and then there's bands like Panda Bear (a favorite of mine), who's properly classified as noise rock, but is still confusing when classified that way.

And I'm thinking Jesus and Mary Chain shoegazing, Venus, as they pretty much started the genre. If you can turn me onto some good bands, though, I'll check 'em out.

edit - of course, then there's also bands that span multiple genres, like Third Eye Blind, for example, who I like. Some of their songs are alt. rock, some (well, one) are folkish, and some are straightforward alt/pop-rock.

I mean, Jazz... it's soooo much and so different.

lol, that's why I mentioned swing and bebop. Though some of the New Orleans movements were pretty damn cool.

And hardcore punk the same. You can't compare Sex Pistols (60s) with Minor Threat (80s) and with whatever there's today (I think it ended in the 80s actually, but continued in other genres).

I gotta be honest and say I don't know much about that genre, but is that really gonna stop me from enjoying it?

Indie Rock, are you talking about 80s and early 90s Dinosaur Jr./Sebadoh/Pavement or are you talking about 00s Franz Ferdinand, Interpol etc.

Interpol's more moody post-punk than directly "indie" styled... just nitpicking here.

or even the just "indie-style" bands like Killers, Razorlight or whatever (which mostly actually are not indie at all >_>). Hell, indie rock can even be a collective term for a lot of other unrelated genres mentioned (maybe even all of them o_O).

Yes, it's a very broad term. :P

Okay, how's this: I like a lot of baroque-pop and chamber-rock in terms of indie music, besides the previously mentioned post-punk influenced bands, and indie-folk groups. I also like a lot of groups that are hard to pigeonhole into a genre, with the closest attempts coming to things like "Disco/Indie/Punk/Rock" and odd combos like that. :P

Nah, J&MC was just really post-punk/noise-pop. You probably get them mixed up because they (or one of them?) created Primal Scream together with Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine (MBV - the actual band that started the Shoegaze scene). And add to the fact that Noise pop and J&MC was big influences for My Bloody Valentine (they just added dream pop and much... much more distortion, lol. Oh and I think MBV is more about creating music textures, rather than melody). Some good bands: http://www.last.fm/tag/shoegaze/artists (although you have to realize this is what people has tagged as Shoegaze, not necessarily all of them are the bands associated with the actual scene)

I don't listen to J&MC or Primal Scream though. Neither of them really interested me from the beginning, and I've been exploring other stuff instead.

I love almost every kind of music in existence. The only genres I'm completely closed off to are Country and Gospel. Even radio rap is fun as long as I get to dance with someone to it. My music library contains everything from game music to Dragonforce to Jay-Z.

However, I definitely have favorite genres. I have a soft spot in my heart for power metal especially :D

Oh, and what about Elephant 6 bands? They're commonly accepted as indie, but pretty hard to stick into an indie subgenre, because they take cues from so much music (and in the case of some, like of montreal, they change so much they don't even have a genre besides indie, almost)

Mhm, twee. I always felt in some ways it came under Ironic a bit, but whatever. And Twee is an odd label, since it's one that bands very rarely give themselves - they don't like to be labeled twee - but often their fans will say they are.

Only certain death metal bands? Obv you don't like all of metal, indie, other(which is lol), alternative, rock, classic rock etc...
So which death metal bands? Or is it say a subgenre, like you like technical and not gore?
Or (sorry to say if not) (considering half the people who think their listening to and/or playing death metal have no idea what it is and are simply shredding over laborious progressions over some minor scale while growling at a medium high, distinguishable voice) is it death metal bands that aren't actually death metal?

However, I definitely have favorite genres. I have a soft spot in my heart for power metal especially :D
:) Power on!
Same here.. Listen to Rhapsody, Angra and Wintersun every single day.

Glad to see no 'HardXCore' or 'DeathXCore' or any of that scene bollocks. Oh, and nothing that BMTH can fall under *shudders*
Its not all !@#$%.. Just 90% of them are money and girl lusting talentless uncreative arseholes regurgitating the same thing that one amateaur band got famous doing before they developed muscular and throat injuries in 1993 from their lack of skill...

Genres (so far):
Glam Rock
Blues Rock

Lol, I gotta say it did shock me, but liking Spoon, The Beatles, Okkervil, Of Montreal and The Shins makes up for that. ;P

Uh, yeah, bands/artists I like (in no real order):

Okkervil River, Bright Eyes, Lodger, Kings Of Leon, Broken Social Scene, Feist, Metric, Arcade Fire, Robbers On High Street, Silversun Pickups, Athlete (only their old stuff), Snow Patrol (again, only the old stuff), Beatles, Belle & Sebastian, Blur, The Flaming Lips, The Hives, Interpol, Jose Gonzalez, Kasabian, Mew, The Raconteurs, Dirty Pretty Things... those are just the ones that spring immediately to mind. ;P

Metalcore (not the !@#$% stuff, too much is all the same, !@#$% wanna get some creativity and self respect).
Post hardcore (same as above)
At first I was chocked at that statement ("same as above") but then I realized "post hardcore" is yet another of those genres going over several decades and used for different kinds of top-genres. For example some electronic music was considered hardcore (at the time it was fast and heavy for the genre), and then there was post hardcore electronic. At the same time there was hardcore punk, stuff like Black Flag and Minor Threat and ten years later Fugazi made something new of hardcore punk at that would become "post hardcore". Today even some bands of the emo-related genres/styles (both mainstream and underground) are called post-hardcore to even confuse it more :X
Since metalcore is a fushion of hardcore punk and metal genres I would guess they called it post hardcore even though it's nothing close to what Fugazi made.

Post Rock
Another genre which is reaaaally varied. The definition I hear the most is instrumental bands (or mostly) and play very long songs which kinda starts slow then goes to an extreme somewhere in the song to then go down to slow again (and that build up can go from instantly to three minutes to more than twenty minutes). Do you mean stuff like Godspeed you! Black Emperor, Tortoise, Mogwai (even though the two latter rejects the label AFAIK)?
Oh, and then there's post-metal which fuses post-rock-influences with metal. Stuff like Isis and Pelican. I think this one makes more sense since you listen to mostly metal music, but I've heard a lot of post-metal fans discovering the post-rock genre as well (and then often just call them both post-rock).

Goregrind
Grindcore (yes, their different!)
If you have the first albums of Napalm Death, send them to me <_< >_>;;
