My laptop came with a bunch of applications for making DVDs, including something called "InterVideo WinDVD Creator 2", which should be great. Except, it makes you re-encode the video before writing, which aside from taking ages, doesn't seem to do a very good job. I assume it's turning it into high bitrate crap or something.

All I want to do is take an mpeg-2 file that's about 2gb big and burn it to DVD, playable in a dvd player. I don't care about fancy authoring and menus and stuff. Problem is, the mpeg file is around three hours long, and so when encoded by WinDVD Creator it doesn't fit on the disk.

So, any suggestions? Any free software that'll burn the movie to dvd at the bitrate / compression it's already at?

Can you do it with Windows Movie Maker or Windows Media Player? Or are you using a Mac?

Well Vista has the Windows DVD Maker thing, but I'm pretty sure you're not using Vista are you.

Try that. Haven't tested it, just googled for 'DVD freeware'

The reviews on that page don't seem to be good, but thanks anyway. I think I've found something promising, although have yet to see if it works:

Get a free trial of Nero, it should automatically burn the file without having to convert the MPEG2 data. Use the Nero Recode or Vision tools (forgot).

What Kirby said. Nero is surprisingly good most of the time.

But not free, right?

Well, this IFOedit thing seems to work fine, it makes a load of stuff and then you write it to the disk as data. It also means that keeping it at the bitrate/resolution I've got it I can fit about four or five hours to a single layer DVD (It's recorded from TV broadcasts so writing it higher quality is pointless).
