I need help with a wireless network now...

Hi...I'm back...again...
I work at a computer repair shop now and I need some help pronto....
This guy has two laptops and a wireless network in his house....
His new laptop (VAIO) connects at 54 mbps.
His wife's laptop (Toshiba) is three years old and only connects at 11mbps...

I already checked his config for the built in wireless card and it can only go to 11mbps...

So I installed a new pc card wireless card that can connect upto 54mbps....
It still only connects at 11mbps...I cant even change the connect rate on this new card...

What can I do?I need help right away!

are your trying to connect the laptops together or to an access point?

I am trying to connect it to an actual network not pc to pc....
