I was just using my external hard drive and my computer crashed.
I had to push the hard reset button on the computer.
Now it says my external hard drive is an unknown device and won't let me use it.
WHat can I do?
I went to Western DIgital's website but they do not offer downloads for drivers for XP.
XP automatically has those drivers(go figure) so they do not offer them.
Would a restore point help maybe?

Nevermind.
It just worked but feel free to post comments on how to avoid the situation again.
I just plugged it back in for the hell of it and it worked.

Erm, I'm actually running an external hard drive as I type :P and I haven't had any problems with it.

What I could suggest is try unplugging it and plugging it back in...
If not, is there a CD that came with the device? If so use that...

Other than that, I could say go to Device Manager find the item, right-click and press "Uninstall" (MAKE SURE ITS NOT YOUR HARD DRIVE INSIDE YOUR COMPUTER) then when thats done, go to Action -> Scan For Hardware Changes... and see if it detects it.

It just found it all of a sudden.
I wonder why it did that to begin with.

Oh and Bert,
How would I have formatted it if the system would not detect it?
Just wondering for future reference.

That's alright.

I think the system crashed because I was using install shield from a program on my EHDD and was working in tandom with a regular HDD that I think is broken so it froze my system and I resest the pc with the EHDD still in use.

I hate installshield.

With the HDD... Make sure it doesn't come unplugged. Also, try the add new hardware wizard in the CP.Also, refrain from doing to many installations from one HDD to another. I usually just plop the little installer right onto the drive.

Just a note, if it happens again, delete the driver and reboot (should be doable in Device Manager). It should auto reinstall fresh... But I don't know if EHDDs appear there.

I think it is a problem with my front usb ports.  It keeps doing it and I have to unplug and replug it in with some force to get it to detect.  I can't use my rear usb ports becuase they are already in use.

Open up your compy and make sure the USB plus are in, or buy a 5 in 1 hub.

They are plugged in fine...They just take  3 or 4 unplug-replug back in sequences before they work.
