Now, don't get me wrong: The film is amazing. Loved almost every minute of it. It's the almost that is the problem.

The ending was just terrible. And I don't mean "Boo hoo" terrible, I don't mean "I was enjoying it so much I was so sad when it ended" terrible, I mean "Dues Ex Machina" terrible. You know the endings where an angel just randomly appears and fixes everything? And how these endings just make the whole story feel pointlessly shite even though up to that point it was awesome? Yeah, it was one of those endings.

I mean, come on!

The prince just comes out of nowhere and announces he will fix every problem. Now, I get that they were going for feel good, but that just destroyed it. If his presence was hinted at more than a "oh, by the way, the prince is gone" at one point in the plot, and if the 'big twist' that the scarecrow was the prince was hinted at even slightly, instead of him just popping out of nowhere, then I'd feel a bit different.

That part of the film wrecked everything from there on out, because you just felt bitter and became extremely cynical and hateful of every soppy romantic moment that followed. And they would have been so grand, instead they became like ash.

Seriously, I know it was a great film for 99% of the time, but why do people, when reviewing the film, completely forget this ending? Are they attacked by amnesia-dust wielding ninjas or what?

The search for the prince was extremely downplayed in the movie, quite sad really.  It's been a while, but I think in the book the scarecrow was the prince and the dog-man was wizard Sulliman, who was a man in the book and far from being the antagonist.  Howl also had the scarecrow's skull on his table for most of the book.

If you enjoyed most of the movie, I highly recommend reading the book and it's sequal, Castle in the Air, a name that is eerily similar to another of Miyazaki's films.

Have you watched any of Miyazaki's original films? (as in not based on a book)

You wanna see upsetting endings, try watching the 2 love interests part ways over and over! :P

I've tracked down a few of them. The first one that comes to mind with the two love interests parting is Princess Mononoke, which is an awesome film. I dunno, I really like those bittersweet endings I guess :P

I was just talking to my mom on the ride home about how I hated endings like that, because she was talking about Twilight's ending and such.

All I have to say, Hayao Miyazaki is amazing! He's one of my art inspirations. :D I do have to admit though, I didn't feel as though Howl's Moving Castle was as good as some of his other famous films like Spirited Away or Totoro.. It was still good though nonetheless.

They're all great films. The music in them fits prefectly and it's a wonderful example to movie makers now days, although they still don't take notice >_>.
I only saw the movie for the first time a couple of days ago actually. Like you said, it was great, but the ending wasn't so good.
And I only saw spritied away for the first time the day before that :). I found that one was better.
Laputa was pretty good though. And porco rosso.

The only other good ones are Castle in the Sky, Howl's Moving castle, and My Neighbour Totoro.

As for Studio Ghibli in general, Grave of the Fireflies, The Cat Returns, and that other one I can't think of are all good movies.

Ponyo hasn't had a release here yet Hawthorne.  Tales of Earthsea is another movies that's been released by Studio Ghibli since Howl's Moving Castle, Darklight.

DRACON UNLEASHES FURY

This film was better than Totoro and Spirited away. Nahawa. Blah.

My favourite film by Miyazaki I've seen so far has to be Porco Rosso. Favourite Studio Ghibli film I've seen so far has to be Grave of the Fireflies. It brought me the closest to tears I've been in a long time :P
