A group of US physicists funded by the US Department of Energy have made a material capable of making light travel backwards, at speeds "that appear faster than the speed of light", at the smallest wavelength ever.

I find this really interesting, it now makes me think that perhaps it might be possible to travel faster than the speed of light... I wonder how the theory of relativity relates to backwards travelling light though  :P

Does this mean they've discovered ludicrous speed?

Lol... "My god... they've gon PLAID!"

It's an interesting theory, but if you just think about it by itself it doesn't seem to make much sense... how can light go backwards? Is backwards light just light that can't see where it's going, or what?

Exactly what I think. People MAKE the definition of what is forward and backwards. We make a reference system where we choose in what axes (and in which pos/neg direction it goes on that axes) it moves when it moves in a certain direction. How someone/something is facing has nothing to do with it. I can for example put up a reference system where facing left is forward and facing forward would be right and so on (and if the body rotates the ultimate "forward"in the reference system is still the same direction. Think it this way: You're right now moving several hundreds of kilometers per second in the space. This because the solar system moves, the earth moves, and maybe even the whole galaxy moves, or the universe! But relative to the earth, you're probably sitting still on your chair, and seems to move with no speed. If you don't move, you can't have a direction (the science term "direction" has another meaning that what we know as "direction"/"facing").
