I don't think Voldemort is very strange at all(though I don't think he'd want to touch Harry in that way, either).  I'd rather say that most other villians are too typical or one-dimensional.  Voldemort has plenty of reason to do what he does, and it's a good thing that he doesn't seem to want anything more than to kill his enemy(as long as the enemy is still alive, anyway).
