Decided to work on some of my solo stuff, especially the live aesthetic. So, I recorded this: http://media.putfile.com/First-Day-Of-My-Life-Bright-Eyes-cover

It's just me, a guitar and a harmonica; I recorded the whole thing live, which is why some of it's a bit crummy. Hope you enjoy nonetheless.

I love this song. Great cover, the harmonica is a great addition and the sloppy style fits this sort of song.

edit - what do you record with? The quality's great.

I virtually bought my new harmonica just to use on this song. I had nothing to use in E major before, and this song just cried out "harmonica solo". <__<

And, yeah, that's why I love folk music. There's a lot more leeway for "artisticness" (read: me being too lazy to re-record).

edit - what do you record with? The quality's great.

I recorded it on my cheapo Logitech USB microphone in Audacity. It's just one of those desktop mics, y'know? I can't find a serial number on or anything...

...damn it. I've got about 5 PC and desktop mics and can't get anywhere near decent reception on either of them. And you've definitely got the acoustic folk thing down. Love to hear more from you, or some original work.

D: I can't download (and I can't/don't want to use the plugin it asks me to download). Could you send me an OGG Vorbis on my email or something?

Found it:

It's the only Logitech USB microphone I could find on Amazon that looked anything like mine. I'm pretty sure that's the one, though I don't think I paid that much for it... it's hard to remember though, I got it ages ago when my old headset finally crapped out on me.

"New" song: (read: Re-recording of a cover I've recorded like, six times before, on my new guitar)

Also, I finally got around to covering Evil... this one's slightly different because the original's not a folk song, and I play this entirely on bass, but whatever:

Sure, one sec, need to convert it (hope you don't mind it's effectively a converted mp3). I could've put it in .ogg earlier, but my computer was crapping out on me and I kinda stupidly closed audacity, so I've effectively lost the lossless version. Oh, well, I've always been a bit careless with my music. Like quality really matters anyway - I'm recording this stuff in my bedroom on barely in tune guitars and my voice is rubbish, soo... <__<

Interpol. I think they've got a thing most artists have nowdays with trying to take 2-2:30 minutes of material and make it 3-4 minutes. Because of that they normally end up losing me by the time the song's over. Covers are both pretty good though.

Not a problem as long as you keep it about the same bitrate. And it's only a quick preview anyway, I'm not really going to archive it. xP
Personally I don't really like this music anymore, though I don't think it's bad (I just find other things more interesting), but it's probably more interesting from you anyway =^.^= Just got the msg, will reply again later after a listen or two.

Probably. Their newer stuff is a little bit bland to be honest. I really like their older, long songs - Specialist, Stella Was A Diver And She Was Always Down and Song Seven come to mind - for the epic feel to the songs and the witty lyricism. I've also always admired the way they can take some very simple riffs and melodies and layer them in a way to make it really sophisticated.

Which, of course, I lose entirely by just playing the bass line solo. Hmm.

Lol, thanks for the confidence, man. ^_^

Aw, don't be too hard on yourself. They are also four (I think) playing at the same time and you alone would have to either use digital layering or a multi-track (either analog or digital). But I still agree with Kame how repetitive it gets after a while, IMO if one is going to do it repetitive, do it instrumentally but no lyrics. That way you can develop it at the same time, which is a lot harder for lyrics (and they only get in the way). But that was more of an advice for Interpol; you were just doing a cover :P

I have never heard the originals of the other two songs, and have only really "heard about" Bright Eyes. But anyway, that doesn't matter, because it was quite good what you did. And it wouldn't be fair to compare with the originals anyway.

Keep it up! :D
