Where I live is typically regarded as a suburb of the City of Nottingham.
The Nottingham accent is very unique though, nobody else can actually emulate it accurately. We aren't north, we aren't south, we aren't even the middle. We are in the east midlands, so if you try to do what most people would try, which is a generic Northern accent, you will be waaaay off. Our dialect is so much more subtle than that. We take some elements from the north, like the odd harsh word, and some elements from the south, like some drawn out words.
Southerners tend to think we're from the North of England, Northerners tend to think we're from the south. American women on Xbox Live tend to scream and send us friend invites, because "OMG I LOVE YOUR ACCENT!" (Happeneded to me all the time before I stopped going on Xbox Live xD).
Why do you think they never bothered with the accent in productions of Robin Hood? Because people who have lived here for 26 years still don't say bath like those born and raised here. No actor worth his salt can do the accent believably.
