Entertainment / Earthbound Siege Marathon
« on: August 30, 2008, 12:42:56 am »
http://thespeedgamers.com/

TheSpeedGamers are doing an Earthbound Siege marathon.  Basically, they're going to play all 3 Mother games live, and we are all supposed to call Nintendo's support lines.

I've been watching since yesterday.

Adverts & Recruitment / Looking for a 3D artist
« on: July 21, 2008, 08:33:08 pm »
I'm currently looking for a 3D artist who can preferably cook up a mean humanoid model, for a project that may or may not net them a bit of pocket cash.

If you're interested, reply to the topic, PM me, or email me.  I can give you further details in private.  But not in public.

OH NOOOooo, not in public mister.

I'm taking a break from game design to work on my other hobby: film-making.

Basically, what I'm looking for is anyone with a camera, webcam, or any other object they can use to record themselves, because I need actors.  Badly.
I am also looking for people I can spend some time chatting with and collaborating with on jokes.  That's the more important of the two.  Someone to collaborate with on jokes.

Anyway, I suppose I should explain the idea for the show.  Basically, it is a show about a team of game developers.  The thing is, though, that very little actual development happens (or is shown, at least), and instead the show will lend itself to jokes, random ramblings, philosophical debates, and other such interesting tidbits of dialog.  Oh, and outrageous props.  For example, I have a giant candy-cane made of plastic tubing.  (Granted, a giant candy cane isn't the best and most wacky of props...  But that's what thrift stores are for, right?)
Anyway, it's about a team of game developers.  Most of the developers don't live anywhere near eachother, though, so all/almost all of their discourse takes place through the internet, through the use of webcam and/or chat software.

I would like the dev team to consist of around 8 or 9 people, with 3 or 4 different members appearing each episode.

In the end, a game might or might not get made.  Who knows?

But the show's background is really just a setup for providing comedy, jokes, and fun for the viewer.  Because that's all a comedy show's plot is.  A springboard for characters and jokes.

Each episode would last between 2 and 5 minutes each, closer to two hopefully.

I would do all the editing and production, and all you would have to do as an actor would be to say the lines while filming yourself.  5 minutes tops.  Also, you get complete creative control over your character.  That is to say that you can design your character if you would like.

And as for collaborating...  All that really requires is chatting for a little while.  Yeah, simple.

If you're interested in the project, please reply and/or PM me.  All help is appreciated.  If you want to do something else that's not related to the acting or collaborating...  PM or reply as well.

Entertainment / What game should I buy?
« on: March 27, 2008, 12:39:06 am »
I just got money to buy one game.  But I don't know what to get.

I want a good experience.  An intense experience.

But the problem is, I have no idea what has come out recently that I need to play.

Suggestions?

Entertainment / It's been a long time guys, and I need your help
« on: February 15, 2008, 02:44:36 am »
Alright, you guys all heard about the Free Halo 3 offer from Microsoft, I'll  bet.  It was the one that was posted with "inaccurate" information about a day before any "real" info.  Anyways, after they changed it, it turned out that I could qualify.  So I ran out and bought an Xbox 360, and subsequently migrated my account so that I could get me a free Halo 3!  The only problem?

I was supposed to receive it by January 25th.  It is now...  February 14th.  Valentines Day.

Heres the forum topic that I have been mainly posting in.  It should give you all the information about what is going on...  Such as, for one, people that don't qualify are getting free Halos.  In fact, people that didn't even register are getting them.
http://forums.xbox.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=18508942

Alright, anyways, I need suggestions about what to do about my complaint next.  How can I make myself heard?  And no, Microsoft Support isn't helping AT ALL.  Any suggestion is a good suggestion, but please don't spam.  I'm angry, and who knows what I might do to a spammer.

EDIT:  Ah sorry, I thought I had posted in the gaming section to start with...   :-\

Entertainment / Did Ganon steal the triforce of power?
« on: April 18, 2007, 06:11:51 am »
In the first Zelda game, didn't it say in the intro (that you see if you wait a moment during the title screen) that Ganon stole the Triforce of power?

And in most of the other Zelda games, isn't it said that he was born with the Triforce of power?

Can someone explain this?   It's making me feel uber-stupid.

Audio / REQUEST: Original music for LoZ game
« on: April 12, 2007, 03:41:03 am »
I'm looking for some original music for a zelda game I am working on.
It is entitled "The Legend of Zelda: The Mirror of Illusion".

I can't use just any music, though.  It has to be low quality.  More specifically, it has to be 2 channel MIDI music, preferably with lead instruments or triangle wave tracks.  You see, the game I am working on is in the style of the Atari 5200, and I didn't think that any of the Gameboy-styled music really fit it.

What I need:
Theme Music   (slow, dark tone)
Field Music   (more upbeat)
In-A-House Music
Shop Theme
Dungeon Theme
Boss Theme

If you know where to find any of this, or want to compose a piece, the help would be greatly appreciated.

Other Projects / [Completed] Population Control
« on: April 09, 2007, 04:01:56 am »
I created this game in about 10 minutes.  It's actually quite fun just to watch.

Download HERE.
(Also, scroll down for the URL.  It's past the instructions.)

Quote
Population Control
A 10 minute game by TreLantana

A casual time-killing game.  The object is to keep your population in check.

Each building will increase by a development stage after a set amount
of time.  The higher the stage, the more people it can support.  When a building
goes past stage "Factory blocking with smog", or stage 13/6, the land it is on will
stop sustaining life for about 2 minutes.

To reduce a building to a lower stage, you must click it a number of times.  the longer
the building has been in it's stage, the more clicks it will take to knock it back.

The game has no conditions for losing, and thus it could and will go on forever if left unattended.

The top of the screen shows the population and the current time played.

The building stages are:

0 - Free, productive land.
1 - Small house
2 - 2 houses
3 - housing development    (This stage can also progess to stage 12 instead.)
4 thru 11 - Office Building
12 - Factory
13 - High-Pollution Factory
14 - Unlivable land

Have fun!

Please, tell me what you think.

EDIT: The EXE I uploaded was a bad version of the game.  It should be fixed now, in case anyone downloaded the bad copy.

Entertainment / Legality of camping out + other question...
« on: December 16, 2006, 06:52:07 pm »
First of all, is camping out REALLY legal?
Plus, when Target opens it's doors tomorrow morning, are they already going to be stocked with the Wii?

11
Entertainment / Target restock...
« on: December 15, 2006, 09:00:07 pm »
Can anyone actually CONFIRM that Target locations are going to restock on Sunday?

Anyone in the Oklahoma area?

Please?

12
Entertainment / What time should I go out...
« on: December 13, 2006, 11:18:16 pm »
On Sunday morning, Target is "allegedly" going to start selling Wii consoles.  They are supposed to have somewhere between 10 and 50 units.

My question?  what would be a good time to go to Target and begin the waiting process?  5:00 AM?  4:00 AM?  10:00 PM the day before?

Also, just in case it is important, Target opens at 8:00 AM and not midnight, just so you know.

13
Entertainment / Has console camping ended yet?
« on: December 11, 2006, 06:45:50 am »
 ???  ???  ???

I'm just not sure, because I'm not hearing of any instances of it lately.
And because Target is supposedly sitting on their shipments until next Sunday, and I would like to know if I need to line up for it.  And I don't want to, because console camping sucks monkey brains.

What are your thoughts?

14
So I got around to calling my local Ma an' Pa game store, and they said that they just recieved a shipment of Wiis, and that noone had bought one yet.  So I prettied myself all up, you know, put on a suit and tie, shaved, brushed and combed my hair, and put on some aftershave.  Then I hopped in my car, and drove the short drive to grab me a Wii.  Being a very small, little known store that still stocks NES, SNES, and Atari games, I was incredibly suprised to find out that all their Wiis had been sold out.  What was even more suprising is that, when people heard just minutes ago that this store stocked Wiis, a line of campers had begun to form outside the store.

So, long story short, this little store won't be getting any more Wiis until after Christmas.  Too bad for those campers...
But I digress.  I decided I would just get one from Circuit City, Best Buy, or a GameStop.  Does anyone know how often they get their shipments, or when their next shipment is scheduled to arrive?  Because I am feeling a Wii-bit depressed about my Wii-less state.  I was really excited about getting to play with my Wii (Sorry, it was obligatory.  Gotta make a Wii joke.), and I was even more ecstatic that I would be able to play with other people over the internet!

So, next shipment, anyone?

15
Hey guys.  You should all know me, the guy who is working on the great multiplayer GB-styled zelda fan game.  (Yes, it is till in the works.  I just can't double post on the topic yet.)  Well, this week I began to get tired with it and came up with an idea that would let me take a break from that project AND not stay away from it too long.

I was wonderring how much of a (simple) zelda game, albeit probably with little story, I could create in two days.  How much originality and innovation can be packed into a game made that quickly?

Those are the questions I set out to find the answer to.  But this topic is also to find out if anyone is either interested in rivalling me, i/e creating a rival game in two days, or if anyone would like to help.  Don't get me wrong, this is not a recruitment topic.  It is supposed to be a place of discussion about this idea, and possibly about the game if the topic is arisen, between anyone willing to post.

My two-day project would probably have the following characteristics:
  • Gameboy styled graphics
  • 160x144 pixel screen
  • Made in GameMaker 6.0-6.1
  • Will probably use a 16x16 tile grid
  • Most likely without sound, could have sounds from Link's Awakening/Oracle Series

Also, the story would be pretty straight forward, and it MAY end up being more like an arcade game than a Zelda game.

I will start on this project tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM U.S. Central time, whether I get team members/competition or not.

So, please discuss, ask questions, volunteer to try to develop a game in two days, etc here.
Please do not flame.  And discuss the IDEA of a two-day game also.  (I just coined a term!)

UPDATE:  I now feel comfortable discussing the story, so as to build up some hype about this.

Eons ago, the three goddesses descended to the planet.  They built, sculpted, and cultivated it before they left.  When they left, they left the gift of the Triforce, or so the legend says.  But they also left another gift, one that is not documented in any of the surviving myths and stories.  They left the race of Fairies, who were meant to guide and protect the race of the Forest People.

The goddesses left the planet, ages passed, and the Forest People left their forests.  The fairies sought to protect the forest people, and thus created six temples of power.  These temples slowed the dying process of the Forest People who left the forest, allowing the race of Mankind to be born, and to prosper.  Man eventually forgot about the Forest People's existence, save the few myths that spoke of them as "Forest Fairies", and moved on with their lives by building kindgdoms and waging wars.

Eventually, though, a man was born who was an immense threat to mankind, a man who could wipe all life out completely.  The fairies sensed this, and gave the power of time to a small orphaned Hylian boy named Link, and brought him to the Great forest,  where he was secretely trained by the Great Deku Tree.  On the day of his 12th birthday, he was given a great trial.  He was to be sent to the Forest Shrine of Power and purify it.  In the shrine, he almost met his doom.  A great fairy named Anu saved him by giving him her power, thus increasing his physical strength and giving him the ability to morph into the form of a fairy.

Upon returning to his home, he found that a force of Moblins had invaded.  With his dying words, the Great Deku Tree told Link to seek out the remaining five shrines of power and channel their energies to defeat the impending evil.

And thus, Link donned the garbs of a hero and set off on his great quest.

That took awhile to type, hope you guys look forward to this.

Graphics / Winamp MP3 Player
« on: August 08, 2006, 06:58:27 pm »
I was really bored yesterday, so I modelled a Winamp Mp3 Player.

About:  The Winamp player has 2 screens, one on front, one on back.  Both are *optionally* backlit.  You can toggle both lights in the menu.  The front is the player face, which shows song info and battery power left, and the back screen is for the equalizer, playlist editor, playlist viewer, video screen, media library, and preferences menu.

The top of the player has a row of buttons on it that include play/pause, stop, next song/fast forward, previous song/rewind, shuffle, and repeat.  The side of the player has the slider for the playlist viewer/editor (the slider has 3 positions, up, down, middle.  It snaps back when the user is not holding it.), menu, equalizer, video viewer, media library, and preferences menu.  Pressing down the slider like a button gives a menu of screens to switch the back screen to.

The bottom of the player has a volume slider, used to control the current volume.

The screens the player has are:

  • Front Screen/Main Window - Shows song stats.
  • Playlist Viewer - Shows the playlist, allows scrolling through the playlist, and pressing the stop button THEN the play button on a specific song will switch to that track.
  • Playlist Editor - Changes the functions of the top buttons to add track/dir, remove track, clear playlist, and sort list.
  • Equalizer - The next track and previous track buttons switch between on-screen sliders.  The slider on the side controls the positions of the frequency sliders.
  • Media Library - Also adds to the playlist, but can also be used to add/view/play files from other devices plugged into the player's USB port.  I/E, the player can power it's USB port so that you can plug other PMP or Mass-storage devices into it and transfer from them.
  • Video Window - Displayed automatically if a playable video is the current track.  Displays the video AND video stats like time left, etc.  Can also be turned on by the user to view advanced visualizations.
  • Preferences Menu - Basically the options menu, but can be used to activate various plugins also.  I/E  Advanced Visualizations, which can be viewed with the Video window toggled on.

Images of the renderred product:

This is the front face.  Note the glow of the backlit screen.

This is the back face.  Note that the headphone jack is now on the opposite side.

This is the slider.

The thing on th eleft of this picture is the battery compartment.  The shape looks semi-messed up, but it is not.   It is meant to be easy to take off, but be able to stay on very easily.

The top buttons.

The player from the bottom

The back face again.

The Earphones.  From this distance you can probably tell I used the texture for the front face on them.  It actually worked quite nicely.

i know this topic seems rather over-done and needless, but I am goign to pull my second all-nighter in a row.  Last night I stayed up playing (and beating) Ninja Gaiden: Black on the X-Box,a nd playing halfway through jade Empire, and then doin' a little WoW (on a private server) on the side.  Tonight I am going to finish Metroid Prime: Hunters, Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime: Echoes, and do a little WoW again.

I am dangerously close to beating Hunters and Echoes (Metroid Prime Games, about an hour away in each) and I plan to restart Prime Original completely and see how far I get.  I plan to start at 11:00 PM Central Time, 10:00 Eastern, and I will be fueled by the occasional Morning Thunder Tea.  I may have some movies playing on the computer I will have sitting next to the TV while I play so I can occassionally glance at them (and finish watching LotR, the two towers) and tell all my friends that "Yeah, I saw that".

The game selection will be as follows:
Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime: Echoes
Metroid Prime: Hunters
Ninja Gaiden Black (mission mode)
Elder Scrolls 3
Elder Scrolls 4
God of War
Doom 3
World of Warcraft
Warcraft 3
Starcraft
Mariokart DS
Mariokart 64
Ocarina of Time

The movie selection will be as follows:

Anchorman
LotR: Two Towers
Detective Conan Movies 2 & 3
FLCL Episodes 1 thru 6
FullMetal Alchemist: Conquerer of Shamabala, Japanese Fansub

I will begin at 11:00 PM central 10:00 PM Eastern and continue until 10:00 AM Central, 9:00 AM Eastern.

Now, what movies/games should i remove/add from/to my selection?

This is not a planned thing, it was kinda spontaneous because I became energized today about an hour ago, at 8:00 PM, and so I brewed up a huge batch of Morning Thunder tea and had nothing to do with it.  So I decided to make a use for it.

Don't wish me luck, for I am not a n00blet.

Discussion / The Official Sky Amulet Polling Booth
« on: July 11, 2006, 10:00:24 pm »
This topic is for getting input on specific areas of my game, The Legend of Zelda:  The Sky Amulet

I've kinda toyed with a coupla ideas on this subject, but I really wanted to let YOU, the players, decide.  I've developed tiles for nearly every option, and I just need some input on this.  If you vote, I'll give you a cookie!  A browser cookie!  (Not really.)

Other Discussion / WTF IS THIS????
« on: July 10, 2006, 04:36:52 pm »
I was just cruisin' the net, lookin' for some bandwith saving scripts for my newly purchased domain http://youcannotsueus.com (note: That site is not currently filled yet.  It will be in about a week, filled with videos.  sweet sweet videos), when I got THIS chain letter from someone I don't even know.  Aren't chain letters illegal, too?  And not just that, I'm not even sure who sent it!

I have cut it down for length issues.

Is this complete crap, or is it just me?  I mean, it even says it's been circulating since 1889 and thats complete honky.  And the stories are just plain dumb.  AND it mentions the N64, an old gaming console.  The idiot who started this chain should've fixed that.  But I still wouldn't have sent it out.

Also, if anyone copies this and sends it out from here and I find out about it, you are as good as chicken-fried steak mister.  Because I will kill you then cook you, and then eat you with your 7 tasty secret herbs and spices.
