Howdy. I have a question for anyone who's computer savvy with up-to-date issues.

Back in October I kept getting constant Blue Screen of Death crashes on my new Laptop that I got in August. This was the usual one where the screen goes blue and has a bunch of white text on it and explains why the system crashed. I figured out the problem and fixed it and it was fine afterwards. Then about two days ago, for no known reason, my computer crashed and went to a BLANK Blue Screen. A friend of mine dismissed it as just a possible random crash, and that it happens sometimes. Well, just about 10 minutes ago it did it again, except it was a Purple Blank Screen.

Has this ever happened to anyone before? What should I do?

I've not seen this before, I presume you're using either Windows ME or 98?

Ive never seen a purple screen caused by the OS itself (perhaps a problem with graphics drivers? hence it couldnt display blue??) But it can be changed to purple, perhaps a virus that changed it or someone in your family/houshold did? Im not sure, but frequent blue screens are generally caused by driver issues, check your drivers are all working properly, did you update any recently?

EDIT: This article - http://www.rtfm-ed.co.uk/?page_id=246 may be of use to some people, is that the screen your talking about?

As Majora said, it's possible the graphics drivers aren't updated or you can find better ones... this also might account for other crashes you've occured, like on KOTOR.

I did a Driver Search for my graphics card and apparently its up to date and I dont need a new driver.

I failed to mention that my laptop was really hot when it happened, so could it have probably over heated causing a crash or something?

Yeah that's possible. Might be worth getting a temperature monitor program so you can see the temperature and warn you when it's too hot. But it should never get too hot to crash, there's most likely ventalation problems if that's the case. Always make sure your laptop is on a hard, flat surface so that the vents underneath can get proper circulation.

Try using a can of compressed air and blow on any vents you see (bottom, sides). Hopefully some dust will fly out (normal), and your laptop should feel a bit better. Is your laptop a Dell by any chance?

If this doesn't help, it might be some malware messing around with your system.

Its a Dell and my room doesnt have a hard flat surface so the comp's always on my lap. Also, its happened twice like between 1 and 2AM when the computers been on for hours, so I think it IS overheating-related. Where can I get that program to monitor the heat? I'm going to try to take better care of this computer now.

Not true... Many a time I've seen laptops overheat, even new ones, to the point of either a) shutting themselves off, or b) running themselves down to naught.

Cooling systems in most laptops simply aren't that great a lot of the time :-\

So cpp, do you think it might be overheating problems? I think so because both times the comp was really hot. Plus I ran a virus check and checked the drivers and there was no problems there. So if it isn't overheating, virus or driver problems, I dont know what is wrong *shrugs*

You should watch out for that and check if your computer is hot when the BSOD or PSOD happens.

This is the program I used to monitor temperatures on my Dell lappy. It's a very useful program.

Basically, what you could do with doing, is building a little thing to sit on your lap, that your laptop can go onto, which has plenty of air flow and holes. Because your legs squish into the laptop's bottom ( o.o?), they block the vents, preventing proper circulation, meaning that it'll get very hot, very quickly.

Did you try using the compressed air to clean out the vents yet?

I know factually that certain Dell laptop models have had this issue of dust accumulation rising temps., and causing them to crash(not to mention that it COULD happen to ANY ..electronic with fans >.<).

Also, if you know, what model is your laptop?

What kind of temps is the program that Falcon linked giving you? I reinforce that being a good program for Dell Laptops(I have a 600m(w/o these pesky fan errors >: D)) ;).

And yes, as Dayjo said, in the end, some devices are just more prone to the fan being.. blocked :-\.

Does your programs, etc act normally? Or does things take a really long time? It might be the graphics card/driver screwing up. The crashes occurs randomly right?

Do try to use the compressed air. My experience with my laptop was unbearable until I decided to blow crap into my laptop XD. First solution that ever worked for my lag-every-20-seconds laptop.

purple?  funny colors can mean your graphic card is overheating.  Careful with that, if that happens your card can fry.

Well, my suggestion would be to back up everything onto an external harddrive, or dvds if you don't have one of those. Possibly email the manufacturer about your overheating problems and see if they have any suggestions. It might be a regular occurance with that model of laptop.
Might even be worth selling the laptop and getting another one >_>.
