First thing that came to my mind was Wee, as in urine.

I wonder if at nintendo, when they were deciding upon the final name, that one guy said "Oh man I need a toilet break before we continue this." Then some other guy, trying to crack a joke said how about we call it the nintendo Wee. Before everyone could laugh, a japanese voice on the telephone (it was a tele-conference) said that he liked that name. Quikly drew up a practice logo and faxed it.

When they recieved the fax, the name Wee read "Wii". They couldnt believe it, the japanese had taken this name seirously, not only that, but they had misspelt it.

	I did too, but when I found out the correct pronunciation, my perspective then changed to "Wee". Logged

And, why are a lot of ppl (including j00, lol) liek: Revo rox, Wii is teh sux, don't see the big deal... Or does it has more sense being: GameCube 2, GameCube 3, GameCube 4, GameCube 5, ... Logged

	Seeing how I'm not a native English speaker, I really didn't think about the "urine" reference until someone mentioned it. First thing that I thought of was "whee", as in the expression of fun. I've started to like the name a lot. Logged

	I think the problem is that everywhere else in the world, Wii is fine, but in the United States, theres thousands and thousands of retarded idiots who think about nothing but fart and pee jokes, sex, and alcohol. That's why its a problem in the US. Nintendo Wii is fine elsewhere. =/ Logged

Anyways, since I still think it's pronounced Why even though I know it's pronounced We, I like to have fun saying Whywhywhywhywhywhywhy really fast. Unfortanutely, a lot of Nintendo haters will probably use the name to their advantage, saying things like "Wii is Nintendo so dumb." And we won't be able to laugh at their mispronounciation because that IS what it looks like. But meh, I'll probably get a fun response out of my dad after telling ihm the new name. ;D Logged

Ok, for my first impression requires me to tell the whole story.

My friend told me there was a name change and signed off, so I had to find it myself. Clicked my Digg RSS, saw "Introducing Nintendo Wii" and clicked it, figuring it was a misspelling of WiFi. Of course, before the page even loaded, I realized my error. At that point I was just very upset, no real "thoughts." Now, though, it's provided for a lot of jokes with my friends. "I can't wait to play with my Wii! I'll play with my Wii until my arm falls off! My Wii is backwards-compatible!"

No, not at all, nice job leaving out canada, and the UK. I'm pretty sure 'wee' is slang for pee in most english speaking countries...

cultural differences, in some countries the name Wii sounds perfectly normal, however in others such as australia, it can sound like toilet humour. This is why nintendo needed to more carefully considered what the name the console as this name clearly does not cater for a global market, only a couple of countries.
